Roon server stuck on "Rescanning files" issue with metadata update (ref#VM3MUQ)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· ROCK Version 2.1 (build 271) production

Just noticed today that my Roon server gets stuck on “Rescanning files.” It says it is rescanning four files to update the metadata, but it gets stuck on file 1 and the scan indicator keeps spinning all day. This is probably due to a corrupted file, but there is nowhere to see which file it is getting stuck on.

Note I was also accessing the metadata of the same share disc to day to update some comments section. I don’t know if this affected but checking log files I’vent found any “CorruptFile”, “ErrorCorrupt”

I moved some files (letter B titles to folder B ) in other folder to see if I could find a file with issue and I got this:

Keeps looping and haven’t found the track yet because so many titles, dont understand well the log file to see the one causing the error.

Looking foward for your help.

Regardless of this matter, music plays fine without any issues

This morning the message was gone. Seems it’s been fixed?

Hi @Moy,

Do you have background work scheduled in Settings → Storage?

If so, then unless you restart the server, Roon won’t attempt to rescan these files until background work is scheduled.

Do you see anything in Skipped Files under Settings → Library?

A quick glance at logs sees Roon choking up on this particular file:

'/roon/sys/storage/…/Ngawang Chotak/121799 GGBC/Four Noble Truths pt1.mp3'

Do you have any tags or custom metadata associated with this track?

We’ll watch for your reply. Thanks!

Yes, enabled 3-5 Am using 10 cores

No, I don’t see anything there

Probably no, it’s an old mp3 from a podcasts. Will look into it an remove it.

I also wanted to ask if it’s ok to modify the files tags directly from the roon music drive? Or I need to move them to local disk, modify them and replace them with the updated ones?

Much appreciated your help!

BTW I noticed the message no longer shows.

Is this showing on the log file? Saw it! How do you know when a file is causing problems in the logs? Thanks

Hi!

I’ve deleted the file as well as other similar types. I’ve rebooted the server, and the loop started again:

Hi @Moy,

It’s normal for Roon to re-scan your file locations upon restart to monitor for changes to the files contained therein. As long as the re-scan eventually completes (and doesn’t return outside of your scheduled network storage re-scan hours), then this is expected behavior.

As per your question about offending files:

Most files that Roon fails to import will appear in Skipped Files in Settings → Library. However, in this case, logs showed a warning that this particular mp3 had failed to scan during background work due to corruption:

03/08 17:04:03 [Local 03/09 01:04:03] Warn: [storage] [directory] Failed to extract audio format from '/roon/sys/storage/mounts/MusicMedia_SanDisk_G-DRIVE_5637474C41574D48_64B6-985C-p2/Music/Ngawang Chotak/121799 GGBC/Four Noble Truths pt1.mp3': CorruptFile

Please let us know if this helps. We’ll watch for your response. Thanks!
