For Roon connectivity to work properly, both Roon Server and Roon Remote need to be turned on.
· I can't turn on Roon Server, I need help.
Describe the issue
Roon Server won't start My Server and Remote are both on the same iMac (OS 12.6.1). When I launch the Remote Interface, it is unable to connect to the Roon Server. I notice on the desktop bar in top right corner, that there is no Roon symbol, so apparently, the server is simply not running. And I have no clue how to turn it on.
Describe your network setup
It's all on the same iMac, no network connection required. True, I also have a remote on a separate iMac, but the issue is at the primary iMac, which hosts the server.
Do you not have a shortcut icon for Roon Server on your desktop, or is it also not listed in Applications?
I’m not a Mac user so things may be different for you, but in Windows I have both shortcut icons showing on the Desktop and Roon and Roon Server are present in the Applications list.
I also think that clicking the “Use this Mac” button that you are seeing should start the Roon Server, and then you need to set the “Launch at startup” option. See:
No, on the Mac there are no Roon launchers on the Desktop at all.
The Roon (GUI) app launcher is in Finder > Applications. The RoonServer is part of the „Roon“ application bundle and can be accessed like this:
It is possible from there to create an alias that can be placed somewhere else (like the dock, the desktop, or in Finder > Applications). I don’t know why Roon Labs doesn’t create this by default.
I also don’t know why they wrote a help page that is incorrect for the Mac:
Hi @Joen_Remmer,
Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. What @Suedkiez is correct and should get you going with Roon. Please let us know if there are any further problems.
Thanks for the support, and yes, @Suedkiez was right.
I now recall I have had this issue before, and also back then I pointed to the inconsistency of the screen that displays, when the server doesn’t start.
The line says: “Set up a Roon Server on this Mac”
and then right underneath is an action button called “Use this Mac”.
Now for a Mac user, who already has a server set up, but it just doesn’t start today, it is very unlikely that he will click that button, because he does not want to set up what he already has!
So recommendation is that you alter the design of that page.
