Roon showing MQA question

Content you’re reporting an issue with

Hi, as far as I know, Tidal doesn’t stream MQA files anymore? I have still about 30% of my albums showing MQA format, but when I control the format in Tidal it’s FLAC. Is there some kind of delay here in what Roon shows for albumformat?

Have you made any edits to this content in Roon?

Is the album identified in Roon?

Is this content from local files, TIDAL, or Qobuz?

Description of the issue

This is discussed elsewhere.

However the key points are:

  • TIDAL has not yet removed all of its 16-bit 44.1k MQA content.
  • TIDAL has removed MQA flags and turned off decoding in its own apps (so the content looks like CD/FLAC even when it’s still MQA).
  • Roon will show you – in the Roon Signal Path – what the content actually is.
  • We’re seeking clarification from TIDAL regarding the timescale (if any) for full MQA removal.

Okey, thanks for this clarification!

One more thing though; if Roon Signal Path shows the right format, there must be an issue with the Roon app when it doesn’t shows the correct info on the album format?

Yeah, that’s pretty much answered in the 2nd part of Mike’s post that I linked to above.

The short of it is that TIDAL does not provide us (anyone) with precise format information, so we have to figure it out ourselves. If the content is relatively stable, it works very well, but when there’s a massive overhaul of the content going on, we’re going to lag a bit.
