Describe the issue
My Roon skips fractions of a second of some songs. It sounds as if the needle of an analog turntable is jumping slightly. However, the same file, played from the same source with a normal media player on my windows notebook, is completely fine. So there is no error in the file; the errors only occur when playing via Roon. This happens with some files and really messes up my music enjoyment. Have you seen this error before? What can I do about it?
It happens only on a few .flac files, on .mp3 files I am not sure, but it happens on very high resolution too. I’d say this jumping or hooking happens on maybe 100 of 3500 files I own. I buy .flac files because I want the best quality. The connection between my Synology DS220+ NAS server (where the file is stored and the Roon server is installed) and my Router and the amplifier is via Cat6 cable, not Wi-Fi. Router's transferrate on cable is 1 Gbit. I first thought it could be a failure on the NAS hard drive. But the files played from the NAS source are ok when played on a simple media player on my notebook (connected via WiFi --> Router and cable --> NAS). I have automated regular data integrity checks (aka scrubs) installed to avoid hard drive failures.
I have no DSP filter engaged and the signal path is showing on the .flac files lossless quality, only when playing .mp3 files the source quality indicator shows the lossy yellow color. My amplifier is a T+A MP 2000 R which is "Roon Ready". The NAS server has got 2 GB ram, 2 Intel Celeron J4025 processors on 2 GHz.
One song having this problem is Grace Jones "Love is the Drug" (from Island Life). There are some places showing this problem. 4 places between 53 and 70 seconds. Interesting: I first tried to send you just the 20 seconds with this problems and I cut it out with my wavepad editor. By mistake I saved the piece with a sampling rate of 44,000 only (attached here). Playing this piece the problem didn’t show up any more. But saving the whole song with a sampling rate of 44,000 didn’t help. The problem is still there. I hope I can upload this file in this form later.
I have a life long subscription and so far very happy with my Roon server.

Thanks for writing in! As a first step, we’ve enabled diagnostic mode for your Roon Server - if you could please bring it online, it should upload a fresh diagnostic report that will allow us to talk a look at any errors occurring during playback.
Let us know when you’ve booted up your Roon Server and connected. Thank you!
My apologies @timboeger we’re still having difficulties enabling diagnostics on your Roon Server machine.
Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!
Ok, I uploaded it under “RoonGoerLogsTimBoegerSkippingFlacs”. I uploaded Roon Server Logs and Roon Goer Logs plus the Grace Jones.flac which is having this problem, maybe the .flac helps in any way if anything else doesn’t help to solve. Thanks.
Thank you for the update. Your NAS specs are not aligned with our minimum requirements. Would you kindly launch the Roon server on a more powerful device and check if the same files will be skipped?
ok. How can I do that? Do you have a link for me where I can download the installer? Thanks (when I go on Roon starter link I have to login and system knows, I have a life long subscription and doesn’t lead me to the installer) Sorry for not knowing how to do it)
I followed your instruction, set up a new Roon Server on my Win machine, imported all music from my NAS server and played my song. Same problem, same skippings at exactly the same locations. Then I removed the NAS location and imported the music from another folder on the Win machine where I am running the new Roon Server. Played the song - and same skipping effects. Doesn’t seem to be a problem with too low abilities of the NAS
Thanks for giving that a try! We have a ticket in with our QA team to attempt in-house reproduction, we should have more information to share next week on that.
We very much appreciate your patience in the meantime!
Apologies if this has been glazed over @timboeger - but have you checked the file integrity of your library using a third-party software like dbpoweramp?
It may be worth analyzing a handful of issue files while our team continues to take a closer look.
We’ll be in touch once your ticket passes through our QA department! Thank you
We’ve reproduced the issue with the files you’ve provided. The team has a ticket to investigate further - we’ll share our findings here as they’re available. Thanks!
