Description of Issue

After starting & playing a few tracks with Roon on my Win 11 Desktop, Roon stops playing after a few songs, but only after a track finishes playing. In order to continue playing I just select Play from here and it continues playing without incident without stopping again during that session that Roon. This happens often, the first time I use Roon that day. I can’t recall it happening more than one time per day regardless of whether I close Roon and reopen later.

This is just a minor annoyance. Thanks!

Description of Issue

What’s not working: After starting & playing a few tracks with Roon on my Win 11 Desktop, Roon stops playing after a few songs. This happens randomly while playing an album where all tracks are selected or while Play Radio randomly, tracks chosen by Roon from my NAS. In order to continue playing I need to restart Roon and it shows where an Album is stopped. From here I start play and playing continues without incident without stopping again during that listening session. This happens often, the first time I use Roon that day. I can’t recall it happening more than one time per day regardless of whether I close Roon and reopen later.
This is NOT a major issue for me, but I feel it is important to report it and alert the Roon developers.

Try a different USB cable. Also, try the Bifrost with a different audio software. I’ve had USB inputs fail on me with several Schiit products.

Turn off IPV6 support.

Your router also has a feature called Self–Organizing Network (SON), which lets it dynamically reconfigure what WiFi devices are connected to which radio channels. If one of your WiFi devices is also a Roon endpoint, the Core sees this behavior and freaks; it stops playing and you have to restart it. Make sure this is turned off. I experienced random stops with a similar feature in an Asus router. They went away after I turned it off.

I’ve not had problems with the same USB cable and JRiver, but let me run through a lengthy list of tracks and see if it stops.
Thanks,
john

Thanks Bill. IPV6 is disabled. But I just turned off SON, so let me see what happens.
Best,
John

Hi @John_Spaventa,

Thanks for the report and for your patience as we worked through the queue to reach your inquiry.

We’ve reviewed diagnostics from your RoonServer install and identified timeouts with endpoints throughout the logged period - these are possibly resulting from a failed multicast forward in the switch in your setup, or from issues reaching external servers like Tidal and Qobuz.

Can you please elaborate on the make and model of network switch in your setup? Do you have any firewalls or VPNs installed?

Lastly, if you can provide an approximate timestamp or the name of a track playing when you next encounter a dropout, it will help our team illuminate the next diagnostic set more clearly and pinpoint the problem.

Thank you and we’ll await your response.

Thanks, Connor, for your response. I’m fine with the time it took to respond, so no worries.

In terms of endpoints, after experimenting for a few weeks, I have settled on three fundamental endpoints. My Desktop PC with Bifrost DAC with wired KEF LS50 speakers as previously explained. Secondly, and I did not mention this in my initial report, I also wirelessly use a SAMSUNG A8 Tablet with KEF LS50 II Wireless speakers in my Family Room, all on the same internal network and all pulling music content from my Synology DS2419+ NAS. I also enjoy Roon ARC in my car on my Google Pixel 7 Pro.
I utilize both the Verizon router’s firewall and the Synology internal firewall.
On the Verizon router I forward port 55000 TCP to my Roon ROCK NUCs internal IP address. On my Synology I have a firewall rule where I selected Destination port, TCP to port 55000.
I do not use VPN of any sort. I use a NETGEAR 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS116NA).

I will endeavor to identify an approximate timestamp for the Desktop PC configuration the next time a track halts playback (dropout) and get that to you as soon as I am able. Note this may have happened on my two other Roon configurations, but I chalk those off to my experimentation in the case of Tablet & LS50 II Wireless or the broadband issues I at times experience with Roon ARC in my car from my Google Pixel Phone with Android Auto.

One question please. What is the proper way to exit Roon? On my Desktop, I just stop the play and exit the Chrome Browser. On my tablet, I usually just close the Roon app. I can’t see any other way to exit.
Thanks

Connor, Play stopped at 2:45 EST today on the track Closer to Believing by Emerson, Lake & Palmer at the :46 mark, after maybe an hour.
Thanks,
John

Play stopped today, 10/9 11:01 am EST. Same config as previously outlined. Let me know what your evaluation shows and hopefully I can fix things on my end.
Thanks

Hi @John_Spaventa,

We wanted to check in here as some time has passed. Did disabling SON in the Verizon router web administration help resolve playback issues?

If not, are you able to clarify the following at your convenience:

  1. Do you receive any red popup notifications within Roon Remote when an album stops or skips?

  2. What about your listening history on the Queue page - does the skipped content continue to display there, or is it missing?

  3. Lastly, can you specify whether the Netgear switch in the above setup in managed or unmanaged? In any case, try a different ethernet port or bypass the switch entirely if physically possible, just to eliminate a variable.

Hi Connor. I’m sure I mentioned it in the thread, but if not, I turned off SON immediately after I was first asked to do so. Even after that my player stops intermittently. In my thread, as you requested, I indicate multiple times where to look in the logs to track the failure.

  1. No red popups.
  2. None noticed.
  3. Netgear Switch is unmanaged. Sure, I will switch ports around on my connection, NP
Also this is not urgent, so if you need more time, NP.
    Thanks,
    Johnny

Hi @John_Spaventa,

Please forgive the miscommunication - it appears you created two separate support threads, which has caused information to be spread throughout two places. Usually, the support team catches this quickly and merges reports, but in this case, I missed it. I’ll merge these threads momentarily and write a more thorough response.

Hi @John_Spaventa,

We’ve taken a closer look at the timestamps you provided and identified timeouts with Roon requests to Tidal’s servers to receive the buffer. If too many of these network dropouts accumulate, Roon will automatically stop playback rather than play a damaged stream.

If you queue a playlist with all local tracks of the same file type, are you able to recreate this playback stoppage? It would appear, based on logging, that the issue only affects higher-resolution tracks from external streaming servers.

Since your desktop has a reliable ethernet connection to your NUC, the most likely culprits here are 1) address resolution issues with Tidal’s servers, likely resolvable by changing your DNS server OR 2) a security feature, firewall, or network setting somewhere in the LAN interfering with upstream requests to Tidal.

To address the first possibility, I recommend entering your main router’s web administration page and changing the assigned DNS server to a known reliable server like Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS.

To address the second possibility, I recommend testing playback with only local content from your library and see if you’re able to reliably reproduce this issue (see above).

RoonServer will run as a background process on any RoonServer machine; Roon Remote, as the UI interface only, can just be closed at will as you’re doing on the tablet. If you’d like, you can enter the Windows Task Manager and terminate Roon as a process on the desktop. However, since your ROCK will be performing the bulk of the processing, you can likely keep Roon Remote running on your Desktop without greatly taxing your available CPU.

Now that we have all the comments in one place, we ought to be able to pin down what’s wrong here without much back-and-forth. I appreciate your help.

Connor,
One correction to what I reported previously with apologies. My Desktop PC LAN is directly cpnnected to the Verizon FIOS CR1000A Gateway 2023 Model and is NOT connected the way as I previously reported, Desktop PCto Netgear Switch. The Verizon Router has 3 LAN connections and my PC has always been in the fastest 10Gb port #1. Ports 2 & 3 are 1Gb.

Per your guidance, I have moved the LAN connection for the PC from the faster 10Gb LAN port to a 1Gb LAN port and will run Roon from the PC, first with a local DB as you suggest and then I will try a DB reading from the NAS and report back on each. I confirm the NUC remains connected via LAN to the Netgear Switch.

Regarding your proposed soultion to address resolution issues with Tidal’s servers, let me explain a bit more.
My Verizon Router only supports 4 DNS Providers, Changeip.com, Dyndns.com, easydns.com or No-ip.com. I pay for and utilize changeip.com in SSL mode for my DNS. In my Synology DNS Server Resolution setting I use Forwarder 1: 8.8.8.8 and Forwarder 2: 4.4.4.4. I use IPv4. I am not sure what to change based on what I now have working.

Thanks for explaining the Roonserver & Roon background processes.

Thank you,
Johnny

Connor,
Update: I just finished playing music from Roonserver (Desktop PC) for over 5 hours with no issues with the Desktop connected to the Routers 1Gb port as it had previously been connected to the 10GB router port.
John

I have not had any issues with the Desktop connected to the Routers 1Gb port. I feel I need more time as my accesses from the Desktop PC have been minimal or short.
Thanks

„Connor“ ,
Today 11/12/23 starting at 1:20pm EST during the playing of tracks Roon on my Desktop PC drops exiting the Roon App. Its happened multiple times in the same hour. I have to restart Roon to continue playing the music. All my details are in this thread. Hope you can investigate and provide stuff I can try to fix this.
Thanks,
John

I’m not sure if Connor is watching the thread for all new posts, but if he isn’t then he won’t see your posts if you just write „Connor“ without the @ character. To tag someone so that they get a notification, use the „at“ like in @John_Spaventa

Done.
Thanks!
