Describe the issue

After updating to macOS Sequoia, when Roon is able to find audio devices, it takes upwards of 30 seconds. The rest of the time, Roon is unable to find devices, including the system audio output.

Playback of my local library as well as Tidal results in skipping every track until Roon times out. I was able to restore this once after a full shutdown and restart, however the problem returned shortly thereafter.

Hi @umami,
Thanks for reaching out to ask us about this issue. I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Hi Daniel,

Just had the issue again at 10:03AM PDT.

Again at 1:27PM PDT. Roon is seeing my audio devices (finally), but the playback still skips every track until timeout.

Arc is working fine on my iPhone, so evidently it is not a problem with either Tidal or the NAS.

Try turning off Sequoia’s Firewall.

Would be great if you can stop advising people to turn off the firewall. That is in no way a fix.

It’s not a fix, it’s a trouble shooting step.

Troubleshooting step at best. But in the various other topics, the user explicitly mentions “fixed it by”.

Fixed it for me! I use a third party Firewall and have never used the firewall built into macOS. After the upgrade to Sequoia it is turned on by default. If your security is that bad you are relying on macOS Firewall you have bigger problems.

[Moderator Edit: Addendum] …

My security is fine, thank you very much. And by the looks of it, better than yours

This is rather crucial information that was conveniently left out when you say “fixed it by disabling the firewall”. I agree it doesn’t make sense to run 2 software firewalls on the same device.

So no, don’t blindly disable a firewall because someone said so.

I think you would disable the firewall momentarily to see if Roon then works. If so, put the firewall back up and then fix the Roon exceptions or pinholes or whatever you want to call them.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and the healthy debate. Turning off the firewall was a good enough bread crumb to get me looking at what else could be interrupting the network connection. Turns out Little Snitch (macOS network monitoring & filtering app) had a content filter enabled that was blocking Roon. Not sure what changed with Sequoia that made this suddenly render Roon inoperable, given that I didn’t change any settings, but can confirm that toggling this filter yields immediate results. Consider this issue resolved.
