Roon stuck on initializing after update (ref#XHAG3S)

What’s happening?

· My Roon software won't start up since the update to 2.57. Server is hosted on a QNAP server and I don't have the option to roll back. I have tried re-installing, re-starting, re-importing from backup and nothing has worked. It works prior to restoring from back up, suggesting 2.57 does not like back ups from 2.56?

How can we help?

Hello @jeromecook !

We’re sorry to see you have this problem.

We have checked the analytics report your device have shared to us and can see that there was an issue with initializing your endpoints.

We would recommend you now to try to restore the backup on version 2.56 on some other machine → Remove endpoints → update to 2.57 → take the backup & restore on your QNAP.

If that is not working for you, can you please upload the backup to our Database Corruption Issues portal and we’ll try to have a look at it ? Thanks!

Regards.

Unfortunately that did not work, same issue present in 2.56, unable to get passed initialization. I have uploaded the database backup file as requested.

Hey @jeromecook,

Thank you for sending that over! Our team will take a closer look and follow up with additional information as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I’d be curious - if you by chance have a third machine still running 2.56, could you try the same steps @alex_h listed, but we’d also like to see if completely refreshing the RAATServer database before creating a fresh backup may change the behavior. So the steps would look like:

  1. Restore your issue backup on a third machine running 2.56
  1. Remove endpoints
  2. Refresh RAATServer database:
    • * Exit out of Roon
      • Navigate to your Roon Servers Database Location

      • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”

      • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”

      • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

  3. Update to 2.57
  4. Create a fresh backup
  5. Attempt to restore on your QNAP

We’ll be monitoring for your reply in the meantime as well, thank you! :raising_hands:

Hi @jeromecook,

Could you please try uploading your backup again? More specifically:

  1. Zip up your RoonBackups folder (right-click it and select “Compress…”):

  2. Submit the .zip file to us through our Database Corruption Issues portal

Thank you!

I have uploaded as directed, please let me know if you have any issues accessing.

I tried it on a third machine, still the same thing happened. After restoring from backup, the server got stuck initializing.

Thanks for giving that a try @jeromecook - were you successful in refreshing the RAATServer database before creating the fresh backup?

We’ve got everything we need for your ticket that is in the development queue. Thanks again for being so prompt with the uploads! We should have more information to share before the end of the week.

Thanks for your patience here, Jereome - this is certainly an odd issue.

I have not been able to restore the backup to any version. I am currently unable to access Roon entirely. I was not able to restore the backup to 2.56, let alone get to the stage of removing endpoints, deleting RAATServer and creating a fresh backup. Right now I can’t get into my database at all.

Hi @jeromecook,

My apologies for the confusion - it looks like you have a few machines still running Roon 2.56. You’re saying that you’re unable to restore the saved backup in these situations as well?

And to confirm, you have no issues restoring older backups prior to 2.56?

correct, i am unable to restore the backup.

I have not had to restore a back up previously so insure whether it would have worked previously

Hi @jeromecook,

Got it, thanks! And as another test, if you create a fresh backup using one of your other machines as a Roon Server, and attempt to restore that backup on your QNAP, do you run into the same issue?

Thank you!

I can’t get into Roon, on any system, with my current database.

I had Roon running on an QNAP NAS, when I went to update it did not come back online.

I went to see what was happening, and it was stuck ‘initializing’.

I follow advice online, that was initially restarting the QNAP, then restarting ROON, then removing Roon and restoring it from back up.

Then I tried restoring the backup, as suggested, on other systems. None of them worked.

I can’t create a fresh back up because I can’t get into my database.

Hey @jeromecook,

Apologies for more confusion here, but you mentioned you were able to restore from an older backup that wasn’t made via Roon 2.56 - is that still the case?

Our team hasn’t been able to review your ticket yet, but we should be discussing it first thing tomorrow. :+1:

I haven’t restored the database.

Hi @jeromecook,

Do you mean you haven’t attempted to restore an older backup yet? Do you have any older backups that you’d be able to test restoring while the team takes a closer look into your case?

Thank you!

I was able to successfully restore from an older backup.
