Roon unable to identify DAC on Docker-installed NAS (ref#TC0YKA)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I installed Roon with Docker in my NAS. I have an Holo Red Streamer and I have SMSL SU-10 Dac.
For now, roon can't identify my DAC (non identified dac).

Can you help me to identify my DAC please

Hey @yann_savalle,

Thanks for the report! The good news is that the Holo Red is correctly matched (“Match … Vendor=Holo Audio Model=Red => Holo Audio RED”), but the USB DAC hanging off it reports itself over ALSA generically as USB ID 152a:85dd, name “SMSL USB AUDIO.” Roon’s internal device database (devicedb) has no entry for that VID:PID pair, so it falls back to the generic “SMSL SMSL USB AUDIO” label instead of showing your actual model (SU-10) with correct icon/branding.

Important: this is a cosmetic/identification gap, not a functional failure. The Holo Red is still successfully reporting full format support (PCM up to 32/768kHz, native DSD to DSD512) and streaming audio to the DAC over USB, audio playback itself isn’t broken. What’s missing is Roon’s ability to show you MQA capability, volume control type, and the model name correctly, because it has no reference entry for that USB ID.

Why this happens: many SMSL DACs share the same generic USB audio receiver/implementation, so they all present the identical descriptor “SMSL USB AUDIO” with the same or similar VID:PID, Roon can’t distinguish SU-10 from other SMSL models this way, and if that exact ID was never submitted, it just doesn’t appear in devicedb at all.

Next steps to actually fix the identification:

  1. In Roon, go to Settings → Audio, click the "Identify this device" link shown in your screenshot, and manually select SMSL SU-10 from the device list if it's offered there.
  2. Confirm firmware on the SU-10 is current; sometimes a firmware update changes the USB descriptor string enough to match an existing entry.
Thank you! 👍

Hi Benjamin,

Thx for your help.

‘‘Settings-> Audio->Identify the device’’
But there is no SMSL DAC listed… I tried to find by different methods (smsl / dac / su / su-10 or even 9) : SMSL brand is not present in the list

SMSL is not a Roon partner, and has no Roon Tested DACs. Consequently there won’t be artwork for the device.

Hello @yann_savalle

To close the loop on this: mjw’s right, SMSL isn’t a Roon partner, so there’s no submitted profile for the SU-10’s USB ID, and no icon/model name to match against.

The important part from Benjamin’s first reply still stands, though: this is a cosmetic identification gap, not a functional one. Your Holo Red is reporting full format support (PCM up to 32/768kHz, native DSD to DSD512) and streaming to the SU-10 correctly. Sound quality and playback aren’t affected, Roon just can’t show the right name and icon for it.

Unless SMSL pursues Roon Ready or Roon Tested certification down the line, this one’s likely to stay as a generic listing. Nothing wrong with your setup.

Understood : this is just aesthetic, so let it be
Thank you all for your feedbacks, Gretings from France !
