Roon unable to output to multiple DACs in convolution environment on W10 (ref#MT1CVF)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· A mate set up my Roon Convolution environment to deliver FIR filters for my 3-way active system. A few weeks ago, it was working fine - however, now I cannot get Roon to output a signal to all 3 DACs simultaneously; I am only able to get output to one DAC at a time.

I am running Roon v2.55, build 1559 (64 bit) on a W10 PC.

I have discovered that the devices which get shown in the Roon 'Audio' screen are controlled by the Windows 'Control Panel/Manage Audio Devices/Playback' window. My issue seems to be ... I can only get a 'green tick' against one DAC at a time. (Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to 'Snip' these screens and then post on this Help request.)

Regards, Andrew

I’m not Roon support, just a fellow music lover.

Are you saying you have one DAC per way to the speakers.

DAC 1 > Bass
DAC 2 > Midrange
DAC 3 > Treble

How are these connected to the Roon Server? USB? Or a Roon Ready endpoint?

Either way, you’d need these 3 grouped as a single zone within Roon. The preferable connection choice would be USB in my mind.

You may need your mate to pop by and see what’s occurred if you aren’t familiar with how they set it up.

Thanks, Mr. F.

Yes:

  • DAC 1 for subs
  • DAC 2 for mid/bass
  • DAC 3 for tweeters.

These are all connected to the Roon W10 PC by USB cables.

When you say “you’d need these 3 grouped as a single zone within Roon” … I don’t know whether my mate did this or not. How do I find out whether they are grouped?

Sorry but why. How do you even know they play perfectly in sync and aren’t phase shifting.

Thank you for your response, Sk.

You asked … why would I do this. It’s because I have an active system and - given Roon offers a Convolution service (which delivers FIR filters) … it’s an excellent way of delivering active XOs. :slightly_smiling_face:

And how do I know the 3 DACs are running in sync - because it sounds marvellous! Better than when I had a miniDSP unit providing IIR filters.

I’ll see if I can find what you referred to, in a couple of hours.

Ok, I guess that makes a little sense if they are the same DACs. Though I’m not sure there isn’t a simpler way.

Yes, all 3 are Topping E30s.

The only ‘simpler way’ I can think of is to buy a multi-channel DAC - like an Okto … which are expensive!

But, yes - grouping has solved the problem (for now, anyway)! So thank you very much for your suggestion.

I’ll just have to wait to see whether it really is permanent - ie. doesn’t change if I get a Roon or W10 update.

Thanks again.
Andrew

Hello @Andrew_Redwood,

Glad to hear the issue is resolved.

On Windows, Roon can output to multiple USB DACs only when they are grouped into a single zone inside Roon. The Windows “default playback device” setting does not apply once the devices are grouped.

If this happens again after an update, just check Settings → Audio and re-group the DACs if needed.

Enjoy the music!

Thank you, Vadim. :+1:
