Roon unable to read music library and losing settings on Taiko Extreme server (ref#X66TUD)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Can’t reach my Server, remotes or ARC

Can’t connect to my Server, remotes or ARC

· Other ARC issues

Tell us what's going on

· Roon is installed in my Taiko extreme server under Window 10 and since last week it did not work anymore. When I launched Roon application, I can't see my Music in EXTREME20439 > (D): Music, it is empty whereas the music is still there when connecting to the Taiko with vnc; I can't have access to audio device (all is empty); I need to reconnect to Qobuz each time. Can you help me please

Tell us about your home network

· My box is a Livebox 6 (Orange) connected to a switch Dela S50 (with a RJ45 cable) which is connected to the Taiko extreme server (with a cable RJ45) and the Taiko is connected to a DAC accuphase via USB. All was working perfectely before last week. Don't think it is related to Roon update as it was said that window is not affected. Roon application is on my Iphone

Hey @Serge_Levy,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report! The fact that you are losing your Qobuz login and your storage is appearing “empty” often points to a corrupted connectivity registry. Roon has a specific fix for this:

  1. Access the Taiko via VNC.
  2. Stop RoonServer (right-click the Roon icon in the system tray and select "Exit").
  3. Open File Explorer and navigate to: \Database\Registry\Core (Usually found in your Roon installation folder).
  4. Find the file named bits and delete it.
  5. Restart RoonServer.

This forces Roon to re-establish the “handshake” with streaming services and local storage.

If the folder still appears empty in Roon Settings > Storage:

  • Edit the Path: In the Roon Remote app, go to Settings > Storage.
  • Click the three dots next to your (D): Music folder and select Edit.
  • Even if the path looks correct, try re-selecting it. Sometimes the update causes Roon to lose the "permissions" to read that specific drive letter until it's re-confirmed.
And lastly, updates can sometimes cause Windows to treat the new version of the software as a "new application," blocking its network access.
  1. On the Taiko, go to Windows Firewall > Allow an app through firewall.
  2. Ensure that both Roon.exe and raatserver.exe are checked for both Private and Public networks.
Let me know if either of the above help, thanks Serge!

I took a picture of my answer because when replying to your noreply e-mail address I received a non delivery message.

You’re supposed to reply in the forum, not to an email address that explicitly says “noreply”, I think…

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for your quick return.

FYI, I use my old MacBook Pro to access the Taiko via VNC.

2. Right clicking the Roon icon, I got delete or Uninstall in local Disk C. Is it equivalent to exit ?

3. Opening File Explorer, I can’t type the backslash to navigate to the path you mentioned (I tried all, shift, Ctrl, Alt, so weird) and can’t find Roon installation folder :slightly_frowning_face: (I will ask to a friend who is more at ease with IT than I am)

Regarding the 2nd method, selecting Edit storage location. Under Folder, I see EXTREME20439 > (D:) Music (which looks correct). Selecting Browse, it changes to EXTREME20439 > (C:) then I re-select (D:) Music, but when saving it says "this folder has already been added thus I need to click cancel and return to EXTREME20439 > (D:) and my 39,000 albums still not appear.

For the last part of your response, I can’t find Windows Firewall :slightly_frowning_face:

If you have some answers it will help but definitively I will ask a friend to have a look too.

What a mess, it was working so well

Thank you and best regards,

Serge.

Hey @Serge_Levy,

I agree in that it might be helpful to have a friend assist with my initial troubleshooting steps above.

That said, see if this helps:

Fix the VNC keyboard issue first - The inability to type a backslash `is almost certainly a keyboard layout mismatch — your Mac keyboard layout is conflicting with the Windows remote session. Quick fix:

  • In the VNC viewer on the Mac, look for a keyboard/input settings option and make sure it's set to pass through key combinations correctly.
  • Alternatively, you can paste the path instead of typing it: copy C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Roon\Database\Registry\Core and paste it into the File Explorer address bar using Ctrl+V.

Then - Rather than navigating manually, you should:

  • Open File Explorer
  • Click the address bar at the top and paste: %localappdata%\Roon\Database\Registry\Core
  • Press Enter, Windows will resolve the %localappdata% variable automatically, no backslash typing needed.
  • Look for a file called bits and delete it.
  • Then restart RoonServer.
Right-clicking the Roon tray icon and seeing only "Delete/Uninstall" is odd, is there a chance you may be right-clicking the wrong icon, or Roon may not be running in the tray? Try:
  • Look for the Roon icon in the hidden icons area (the little arrow ^ in the bottom-right taskbar).
  • If RoonServer isn't in the tray at all, you can stop it via Task Manager → find RoonServer.exe → End Task.

Given the VNC complexity, it’s worth having someone physically at the Taiko to run these steps directly. The core fix (deleting the bits file) is simple if you can navigate there, it’s the remote access friction that’s making it hard.

Thanks, Serge! :folded_hands:

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you.

Following your explanations I managed to quit Roon server then to access the bits file and deleted it then restart Roon server.

Unfortunately nothing changed! No audio devices found in Audio and Music folder appears empty in Roon application.

I also restarted my box then the Taiko + Dac but still the same issue. It’s like Roon server can’t be find.

Really annoying.

Best regards

Serge

Since you are using a Windows 10 based PC, I would verify that both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe have been added as exceptions to your Windows firewall.

You can use these instructions to add the exceptions and the executables themselves would be located in your Database Location/Application folder path.

I would also add these exceptions to any Antivirus or other Firewall blocking applications you may have and ensure that you connected to your network via a Private network, not a Public one, see this guide for more information.

Let us know if this helps.

Hi,

A friend of me working on IT was there today to help following your instructions + other few things like reinstalling the USB driver, the previous Roon client version on my MacBook and the Music folder but without any success.

Can’t do anything on the firewall as it is disable on Windows on the Taiko.

I am asking to taiko support in parallel to know about the compatibility between the new version on Roon server and the Taiko and if they heard similar issues.

Looking on the forum it seems the new version of Roon is a mess for lot of people who can’t connect anymore their DAC and with Music folder appearing as empty. Any chance to get a new release soon ?

In the meantime is there a way to get the previous file of Roon server to be reinstall on my Taiko. If you can send me a link.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards

Serge

Hi @Serge_Levy,

Thanks for the update, and I’m sorry to hear your issues persist.

As a simple next step, could you please delete the Roon mobile app on your iPhone and perform a fresh reinstall?

Doing the same for Roon on your macOS would be a good next step as well. While theres a few different ways to do this, let’s first see if a simple download and reinstall changes any behavior. You can download the latest version of Roon here:

Let us know if the above helps, thanks again Serge! :+1:

Hi Benjamin,

Actually Taiko support help me to fix the issue after 2 days working on the Taiko server through TeamViewer.

He reinstalled Roon server in the Taiko, recreated my profile and database and we make lot of test then it works again the 2nd day. I reloaded my 32,000 albums in Roon on my IPhone and it took more than 12 hours (lot of more time than the first time).

To be honest the new version seems less stable because this morning Roon can’t find the server and asked me to select a new one then identified the Taiko where I can find my Music but the DAC was not recognized. I switched off the Taiko then the DAC then switched On again without any success until I remove the USB cable and put it again.

And it works fine now. I can listen my music in the library as well as streaming in Qobuz .

Hope I will not have to do that each time I want to listen Music!

PS I already updated Roon 2.66 in my IPhone.

Now that it seems to work I would prefer not to desinstal and reinstal it.
