I’ve been running Roon for many years on a Windows computer. The performance on that computer has gradually declined du to age. So I upgraded to a new MacMini M4 (basic model, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD).
After installing Roon on the MAC I have experienced severe stability issues. I runs for a few days. Then it the database is apparently corrupted. When reinstalling the database from backups it can’t find any devices.
I have of course restarted and tried the basic stuff. I really need help to get this to work.
System as follows:
I Gbs fiber to fiberbox. Ethernet (Supra Cat 8) to ASUS GT- BE98. Router to HP Procurve 1800-24G via Supra Cat 8 cable. From Switch to MacMINI via Supra Cat 8 cable. From MacMini to other Firebox via Cat 8. From Firebox to Melco S100 Switch via Fiber. From Melco Switch to HifiRose RS 130 Streamer via Fiber. From Streamer to HifiRose RD160 DAC via Fiber or i2s over HDMI. From DAC to Apurna Soprano amplifiers via OAC Nano+ Balanced XLR cables. From Amplifiers to MBL 101E MK2 speakers via OAC Nano+ Speaker Cables.
This helps our team gather all the necessary information to solve your issue as quickly as possible. Thank you!
Thank you for the detailed description of your setup.
Before we investigate deeper, we need to determine whether the issue is caused by something in your existing database or if it also occurs on a clean installation. This will help us understand whether we’re dealing with corruption carried over from your previous system.
After executing your instructions the system works. IT usually does after reinstallation. I have not restored the backup which means that a lot of my playlists are unavailable. I suggest that we try without the restore of the old database for a few days to see if the system, indeed, is stable. After that or when instability occurs, I will get back here.
Thank you for your kind and professional help.
If you need any databases or any logs, please let me know and instruct on how to retrieve them and I will send them to you.
I did test the system just now with the system I detailed before, which works fine. No problem finding or enabling any devices. One thing I noticed though was that on one of my stand alone speakers, a Devialet Mania, the volume can’t be adjusted from max volume, either on the device or from the Roon system. When setting it on fixed volume in the ROON settings for the speaker I can adjust it on the device. This did not happen on the Windows platform.
Thanks for the update! The Mania is not a Roon Ready / RAAT device, so Roon can only control volume if the underlying protocol (e.g., AirPlay) exposes a volume API.
And when a device tells Roon it’s “Fixed Volume only,” Roon locks the slider at 100%. When Roon tries to control device volume → Device rejects it → Roon locks to 100. When you set Roon to “Fixed Volume” → Roon stops trying to control volume → Device’s hardware volume buttons work normally.
If youre streaming via airplay - what happens if you head into the device settings and enable the airplay compatibility toggle? Does that change any behavior for you?
Please let us know if you have any further questions; we’re eager to assist. Otherwise, we will allow this thread to auto-close after several days of inactivity.
I have now run the installation for a week and I has been entirely stable. All good from that perspective. There is a drawback though, from not having restored my backup. A lot of my playlists are not available. It is in fact my belief that all playlists created in Roon have vanished.
My conclusion is that my backup is the cause to the instability issues I had. Why it is so, I can only speculate in. The backup was made from a windows machine while the new installation is in a Mac? I don’t know.
What interests me is if I can, somehow, extract the playlist information from the old backup and recreate them ir if they are lost for good?
Glad to hear things have stabilized! Sorry to hear about losing your playlists though.
@Jim_F is spot on - you could likely restore your previous backup on your previous machine, export your playlists over to sounddiz, then move back over to your new server - log into the same sounddiz account, and transfer over your playlists.
Let me know if this makes sense and if you have any additional questions along the way!
