Roon with HQplayer

Hi
Why am I not able to feed HQplayer pcm files (without upsampling first) from Roon?
When I play a song from roon , pcm, it won’t play on HQplayer. It will only play if I upsample to dsd with Roon first.

Can you show a screenshot of the HQP main page and your settings?

When I try to uplod the screenshot it gives me:
“Uninitialized constant: exfir jpeg”

Is there another way to upload the screenshot?

There does seem to be an issue with this uploading. If you can save it to a photo sharing website and paste the link?

Thanks for helping

The first thing I’d try is on the PCM settings lower the sample rate to 192 or 384 whichever your DAC can handle. You seem to have a stratospheric value selected.

Great! I lowered it to 384 and it works.

Now how do I make HQP upsample to DSD256?

In HQP I see on top: 44.1k/16/2---->352.8

Set this to SDM (DSD) and PCM and DSD will be upsampled to DSD256. If left to auto PCM is upsampled to PCM 384 or 356 if you have auto family rate selected.

Ok I did switched from auto to SDM (DSD)

It is working but with an annoying buzzy sound in the song and with a terrible lag.
After a couple of minutes HQP crashed

I tried to put the SDM settings on the minimum bit rate but still it has this problem.

Any ideas?

I have a Lampizator Big7 DAC if it helps…

If PCM works but you have issues with DSD it could be the machine running HQP is not powerful enough?

Have a look at CPU usage?

Also perhaps try switching off direct DSM.

I’m presume you DAC can do native DSD not DSD over DoP?

.sjb

What would you say is a good machine to run HQP? What would be the minimum requirements?
I am using an i5 -6260u NUC 1.80Ghz
I5 processor with 16gb ram running Win10
I presume that is enough power?

Cpu usage is about 37%

I tried switching off direct DSM but no success.

My DAC does Native DSD…

This is frustrating…

Try the -2s version of the filter on the lowest DSD rate 44 x 64 and see what happens.

IFi that doesn’t work try buffer at default and multicore DSP at greyed.

does your PC have a nvidia graphics card? If not turn off CUDA.

HQP can be a journey but when it’s up and working it’s pretty darn impressive.

Yeah!! It works now.

The trick was greying the multicore DSP
Why are there 3 options? Check, grey and white?
I assume the -2s also helped… what is the -2s filter?

I succeeded upsampling to 256
Sounds amazing!!!

-2s are less CPU intensive.

You could try the original again to see but most people don’t hear a difference between them.

Enjoy the ride!

Hi sjb,

One last question.

If I want to use the regular filters (not the -2s) would an upgrade to the newest generation I7 processor be enough or would I need to obtain an NVIDIA CUDA card?

Which of them would be the first to upgrade?

Thanks

I can’t speak for @Sloop_John_B of course but I believe he said he has the xtr non-2s filters working at DSD512 with an i7-8700 (with a NUC NAA).

But also see this from Jussi:

Hi Sean,

From what I understand the CUDA option in HQplayer isn’t as relevant as upgrading the processor?

Would an i7-8705G do the job?
What about I7 7567U?
