Roon Zone and Watched Folder Issue on New Mac Mini M4 (ref#XWPTAP)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Let me start by saying I know almost nothing about computers. i know how do run the internet and the apps I use (on a basic level) but that's about it. Ive had a lifetime subscription for about 8yrs and have been running roon on my 2012 mac mini which has worked great. I have a Meridian 210 steamer that outputs to a Border Patrol DAC and this setup has worked perfectly with roon since I first got the streamer, ie no problems with roon recognizing the streamer or with recognizing my (very old)apple airport express which is used as an additional zone for a second music system.
However fearing that my old Mac mini would no longer work with the upcoming roon april 27 update (very angry about that!) I rushed out and had to buy a new mac mini m4 just so I could continue using roon.
Because I know nothing about computer operations I was very nervous about going through the complicated process of changing to a new roon server and moving my database etc. I looked at roon community instructions on how to migrate to a new roon server and with great anxiety started the process.
Because I didn't know how to transfer/migrate my old mac mini to my new mac mini I took both computers to a mac repair guy who migrated everything over to my new mac mini. He knew nothing about roon so he just did the mac mini migration and left changing roon server migration to me.
I tried to follow the roon online instructions for migrating servers and moving my database (although it seemed like some steps were not needed as I had already backed up database to the external hard drive before starting.
when I started my new mac mini for the first time my desktop and everything seemed normal so I launched roon on the new mini and went to step three "Restoring Your Database". I connected my external usb hard drive that contained my backups and launched roon. right away there was an issue in that I didn't see the roon login screen with the restore a backup option. I think it was because my computer was set to auto log in on startup and to auto start roon. at that point I just went to settings, backups, restore backup and restored the last backup I had made before unplugging the usb hard drive from the old mini. That appeared to work as the backup worked and all my albums from both tidal and qobuz appeared and my roon server was shown as my new mac mini.
However, neither my median 210 streamer or my apple airport express shows up as zones, just system output and Mac mini speaker. Also the seagate drive doesn't show up in my watched folders area.
Im sure Ive made an error in setting all this up and now Im completely befuddled and don't really know what to do now.
I disconnected my old mac mini as a server and shut it off.
on the surface it seems like roon is all there on my new mini/server but my meridian 210 streamer and airport express are both missing as zones.
Due to my very limited understanding of computers and navigating around in them, as well as the jargon, Ill need to be helped through this step by step Im afraid.
Very anxious about all of this.

Tell us about your home network

· none of that equipment is permanent to my problem as its all working fine. Im sure Ive just screwed up the migration to my new server or have missed a step.

Sounds like you may have to do this dance due to Apple’s paranoid local network restrictions:

Otherwise, congrats

Also, I just tried making a backup to my usb external hard drive but it won’t work, says unauthorized folder. Tried making a backup to my internal drive and that worked fine.

Thanks Suedkiez that actually worked, even with my minimal computer skills. i toggled my roon server on, restarted computer and now my meridian streamer is there. still not showing my apple airport express though. need to get that going as well as it runs my second music system (Altec 19’s and 300B SET tube amp)

For your external hard drive, macOS should ask you if you want to allow access when you plug it in. Didn’t it do that?

Does the Airport appear in Roon > Settings > Audio at all?

Hi, rebooted router and airport express showed up.Listened to music on both systems via Meridian 210 streamer and airport express and everything working so thanks for the help there.
One side note I wasn’t expecting is that for whatever reason, running roon on my m4 mini the quality of sound is noticeably better than on my 2012 mini. So much so that two other people commented almost right away before knowing I had changed to a new computer. Bonus there. My audio system is fairly high end and resolving so capable of exposing small changes to system but wasn’t expecting any changes due to new computer.
one problem remains though and that’s the issue described earlier with the usb hard drive. Can’t remember if I was asked about allowing access when I plugged it in or not, but it shows up on mac menu and in roon as a destination for backups but when I click on it in roon backup now, it won’t access it. Also somewhere in roon (can’t remember where) I got a message saying it appears that seagate folder is empty, but I know it’s not. It contains my roon backups and cd rips from iTunes. It’s the drive I successfully used when I transferred my roon database when I migrated to my new mac mini roon server.

Here’s some new info on that. Just tried manual backup again now to that seagate usb drive and now getting a message I haven’t seen before. After selecting the seagate and pressing select this folder, in red letters it says backup failed unable to create backup directory.

Congrats to the progress, nearly there! I don’t know what’s going on with that drive, but most likely the support staff can quickly spot the specific error in the logs when they return next week, so I guess waiting will be the fastest way

Can you create a folder on this drive in the Mac Finder?

OK thanks for all your help as at least Im playing music. I may just buy another new usb drive and try that. maybe roon will recognize it. my seagate drive is quite old and had to use an usbA to usbC adaptor to plug into the new mini. although it appears to be working on the mac mini roon seems unable to see the folders in it or backup to it even though roon sees the drive itself. Cheers

It is strange indeed

yes I just created a new folder on the Seagate drive using finder on the mac. When I try to create a new folder on the seagate drive in the roon “Choose folder to backup to” window, I get the message “Error loading folder. Unauthorized”

Hi @HiFiDez ,

Since you can create a folder on the Seagate drive using the Mac Finder, your drive and the adapter are working perfectly fine.
The issue is actually caused by the security features in the new macOS. The system is simply blocking Roon from accessing external drives, which is why it says “Unauthorized”.
To fix this, we just need to give Roon permission to access your disk. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

  1. Open your Mac's System Settings.
  2. Click on Privacy & Security in the left sidebar.
  3. Scroll down on the right side and click on Full Disk Access.
  4. Look for Roon (and/or Roon Server) in the list of applications.
  5. Turn the toggle switch ON next to it. (Note: You might need to use your Mac password or Touch ID to make changes. If Roon isn't in the list, click the "+" button at the bottom of the list to add it).
  6. Restart your Mac just to be absolutely sure the changes take effect.
Once your Mac restarts, please open Roon and try to perform the backup to your Seagate drive one more time. If it works, that's fantastic! But even if it fails again, please let us know. Trying to run the backup after granting these permissions will generate a fresh diagnostics report in your system logs. The support team can then pull this report and see exactly what is happening under the hood. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for that help. I suspected that’s what I should do but was too nervous to try it without hearing from you.
It appears to have worked but I haven’t yet tried backing up to that drive yet as another issue has popped up.
as I previously explained, after getting my new mini and migrating my Roon database to it the only files that weren’t migrated were my CD rips that were on the seagate ext drive as that drive couldn’t be accessed within roon. After your advice about authorizing the drive through the security settings worked roon started adding those CD rips to my library. However something isn’t right. After an hour of roon adding CD rips and cover art my album count now reads over 6000 albums and still going. I know for a fact I should only have about 5200 albums or so but it appears roon is adding those CD rips twice to my library and still going! because all of this is still going and that spinner spinning, I can’t try backing up to that seagate drive, although Im pretty sure that will now work given roon has accessed the drive and is adding those rips to my library. Why is it adding all these doubles and not stopping? As I write this Its now at 6500 and still going! It’s roon running smoke! how can I stop it and how will I now clean up all the doubles (triples?)
Need help!!
I see its added some albums nine times and still going

Now it’s at 7500 and still going. where will this end? I can’t believe there’s not a simple button to abort the scan/adding albums!!

OK the only way I stopped this was to shut down roon, shut down computer, restart computer and eject the seagate drive. now restarted roon and all those CD rips from the seagate drive are gone and my library reading 4100 albums.
so after another hour of wasted time Im back to where I was.
Just now tried restarting roon and trying to backup to that seagate drive. that appeared to work but after backup was done when I returned to the albums screen roon had readied all those 7500 albums and just keeps going. It appears I’ll have to eject that drive again and restart everything and not use that drive for now and abandon all my CD rips and not be able to play them. This turning into a gong show. very frustrated now as Im sitting here thinking about all the hrs Ive wasted trouble shooting roon over the yrs. likely in excess of 100 hrs of my time and 1000$ spent on my new computer just to use rooms april update, which now Im too afraid to even download as who knows what new glitches that will cause. unreal!

OK, so I figured out that it was a watched folder issue. Ive cleaned that up and now all is good. Roon found my CD rips and added them to my library ( although now they all show up first when sorting by date added which is how I like to view my library, thus forcing me to wade through all my rips to get to my recent tidal and qobuz adds…sigh). all now working.
I have learned a lot about roon and my computer dealing with all this and I thank everyone who helped out. I feel much empowered now. Although I also feel physically and mentally drained after hours of fiddling with roon, even though some of it due to my own computer ignorance. Now I still have to cross my fingers and download that new major roon update from April 27 and hope it doesn’t cause further glitches.
I don’t remember feeling this way with my record player……god I miss my record player.

Hi @HiFiDez,

Thanks for letting us know you were able to resolve this. It sounds like the watched folder was the root of the issue, and I am glad you were able to clean that up and get your CD rips back into the library.

We also noted your comment about those albums now appearing first when sorting by date added, there was a bug fix in today’s release for this. If anything else comes up as you work through the new update, please let us know. We’ll go ahead and close this one out. Enjoy your music.
