Describe the issue

macOS RoonAppliance process memory usage

Describe your network setup

MacMini M1, Netgear GS208 Ethernet switch, Asus RT-AC68U router with Merlin Firmware

Hello @Vexari ,

Do you notice any issues occurring in Roon? Looking over your account diagnostics it looks like there are a few active networking interfaces. Can you try to disable your unused ones and see if the memory usage persists?

Hello @noris ,

Since I posted this message, I had restarted the Roon Server, but I see that today the “RoonAppliance” process is already at 8.82Gb ! (see screen capture below).

I noticed as well that Roon couldn’t find my audio device, which is “SoundID” from Sonarworks.

I just quit and restarted the Roon server, and now my audio device is available again, and the “RoonAppliance” process memory usage is much better.

When I leave Roon running for a few days, I noticed its memory usage keeps growing up to quite a substantial amount.
Looks like there is some kind of a memory leak going on here, which seems problematic to me for a server usage. My MacMini M1 has 16Gb of RAM.
Please note that I’m also using Qobuz service with Roon.

What do you mean by “active networking interfaces” and disable the “unused” ones?
I’m also using my iPhone with Arc, as well as my work iMac which is connected to my home Roon server through ZeroTier which has been working fine for over a year.

Hi @Vexari,
Thanks for sharing that information with us

What is meant here is something like having ethernet and wi-fi enabled on your server machine. Roon locks onto the first active network interface it finds on your machine. This can be a problem if it uses the wrong one. So if you only leave active the one you want Roon to use those type of networking problems can be avoided.

ok thanks @daniel ,

Ethernet and wi-fi is enabled on my Mac Mini M1 server machine. Please note thant both ethernet and wi-fi are pointing to the same router, LAN network and internet connexion.

But why would this make the “RoonAppliance” process leak memory?

Doesn’t macOS prioritise the fastest network interface anyway?

Sometimes I need to activate wi-fi on my Mac Mini M1 to be able to use Airdrop.

Anyway, I disabled wi-fi on the Mac Mini, we’ll see, but I must confess that I’m a bit sceptical.

Hi @Vexari ,

Yes, please let us know if there is any improvement with WiFi disabled when you can, thanks!

Describe the issue

I use a Mac Mini M1 as my Roon Server, as well as my main Roon Remote.

I noticed that the "RoonAppliance" process memory usage keeps growing up to quite a substantial amount after a few days of use.

I've already posted a support request for this, as I was busy for a couple weeks, the thread closed automatically.

Following @noris question in previous thread, I had disabled wi-fi on the mac mini and didn't enable it sinc, but it doesn't seem to stop the memory leak.

Hey @Vexari ,

I’ve merged and re-opened your original thread so that we can have all the info in one place. I’ve activated diagnostics mode for your account and I see something interesting in your logs with regard to the memory usage, I am going to run this by the team to get their thoughts and we’ll get back to you.

Hello @noris,
thanks for the merge.

I have been checking the memory usage and it seems to be starting to go back up again.

Hello @Vexari ,

Thanks for the confirmation. I spoke to the team regarding this behavior and we are looking into ways to get deeper logging to troubleshoot this issue, we will revert to you once we have next steps available.

Hi @noris ,

Thanks for the feedback.
I checked again this morning, after having quit the Roon remote app, and memory usage seems to behave.

For information, I’ll have to restart now my Mac Mini for other reason.

Hi @Vexari,
Thanks for the update. We’ll add the information to the ticket tracking this issue. The team is still working on the new logging. Thank you for your continued patience!
