RoonBridge on Mac Minis linked and sharing IDs (ref#22T0AG)

Describe the issue

I have multiple Mac Mini machines running on my network with the RoonBridge software installed. I've found that 2 of the devices being discovered by Roon are somehow being mixed up and linked. I have screenshots and even video of the behavior. Whenever I edit one it modifies the one I am attempting to modify and a second Mac Mini on my network. It's almost like the two RoonBridges are claiming the same ID on the network, yet they each have different IPs. The screenshot shows both Mac Mini devices "This Mac" claiming the same name. When I edit one, the other flips over to that name as well.

All versions of Roon Server & Roon Application and RoonBridge are the most up-to-date available.

Roon Server and Roon Application 2.0 build 1483
RoonBridge 1.8 build 1125

Describe your network setup

Ubiquti Unifi setup. Roon Server is configured with 2 NICs but the RoonBridges are only equipped with a single NIC on the same L2 network as one of the Roon Server NICs.

Did you clone the 2nd Mac Mini from the 1st after installation Roon?
If so the Roon ID of the Roon Bridge will also have been cloned, resulting in this behaviour.

I didn’t. In fact as a part of my troubleshooting process I re-imaged one of them with a fresh install of macOS (Recovery>Wipe disk>reinstall) which I’d have thought would have created a new ID? I haven’t done that on the second though so I guess I’ll give that a try too. Is there a way to find out the Roon ID of each device (UI or even cli)?

@Jeremy_Meeler ,

What’s your result when deactivating Tailscale or any active VPN?

No active VPN is enabled.

Hey @Jeremy_Meeler,

Thanks for writing in!

We agree - this should have done the trick. You could also test out clearing the .rmembid file from one of the Macs, steps to follow are below:

Please use the below steps to reset your Roon Machine ID :

  • Before doing anything, create a Backup of your Roon database and save it somewhere safe
  • Close the Roon app on your server and close the Roon Remote app on your Remote machine
  • Enable show hidden files and folders for your Mac
  • Locate the .rmembid file in your home directory on your OSX Roon Remote and delete it
  • Locate the .rmembid file in your home directory on your Roon Server device and delete it as well
  • Open your Roon Database Location on your server machine, find the folder called “RAAT_Server” and delete it
  • Open the Roon Database Location on your Roon Remote and perform the same deletion of the “RAATServer” folder and also the “Roon” folder (just on your Remote)
  • Reinstall the Roon Remote App for your Remote machine but do not open the Roon app yet
  • Open your Roon Server
  • Open the Roon app on your Remote
  • Let us know if that helps

That pointed me in the right direction for sure and I was able to get it things sorted out.

One question – could the situation described earlier be a result of running both the Roon App and Roon Bridge simultaneously on the same hardware? Reason being, I prefer to have the option to run things headless from the Mac Minis, but I also sometimes want to use the Roon App on them if I’m sitting at the keyboard.
