Hi everyone!

RoonOS 3.0 is here. It’s the largest RoonOS update we’ve shipped in years, and we’ve spent the last few months working through feedback from the community in Early Access.

We’re so excited for RoonOS to move out of your audio rack and into your Living Room. Starting today, you can plug a Nucleus One, Nucleus Titan, or ROCK directly into your TV, giving you instant access to Roon’s Now Playing display on the big screen.

Alongside that, we’ve completely overhauled how you manage RoonOS, with a redesigned Web UI, network diagnostics, automatic repair for USB drives, better handling of network shares on your NAS, and a more configurable Data share built on an entirely new file-sharing stack.

## RoonOS on your TV

Connect a Nucleus One, Nucleus Titan, or ROCK on a supported Intel NUC to a TV over HDMI, and Roon turns that screen into a Now Playing display with album and artist imagery, scrolling lyrics, track info, and progress. If you’ve used Chromecast or a web browser as a display zone, this is the same experience, now built into RoonOS itself.

Setup takes less than a minute. Plug your RoonOS device into a TV or display over HDMI, and Roon will automatically configure both the audio output and the display. Just click play!

Your HDMI connection is automatically listed in **Settings → Displays** as well. The display zone turns itself on as soon as Roon finds it, and it’s ready to be assigned to any audio zone in your home. You can link it from the any zone’s Volume control - just tap the Displays icon → pick the HDMI display. If you (or Roon) turned it off at some point, go to **Settings → Displays** , find the entry, and switch **Enable** back on.

Once it’s linked to an audio zone, the display shows album art, track title and artist, and playback progress in real time, and an idle view when nothing is playing. The audio zone and the display zone are independent - you can turn off the display while the music keeps playing, or the reverse. The link is remembered, and it comes back on its own after a network hiccup, a RoonServer restart, or a device reboot.

**Important:** You’ll need RoonServer running the latest production build for the HDMI display zone to work correctly.

## Easier to setup and easier to use

### Web UI redesign

The Web UI has been completely redesigned so it’s even easier to setup and configure RoonOS. Everything now lives in four tabs - Overview, Storage, Networking, and Settings - and the power controls have their own menu. The Overview tab shows the state of RoonServer, your storage, Tailscale, and your USB drives at a glance.

 ![Screenshot 2026-10-28 at 19.10.08](https://roon-community-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/original/4X/9/c/7/9c7d6eee717a49fd2576589d11a488a5de6f6eea.png)

Changing network settings is quicker too: when you save new DNS or IP settings, they apply right away, with no reboot. We also reworked the troubleshooting screens to be more straightforward.

### Easier updates and reinstalls

When a RoonOS update is available, the Web UI shows an alert and lets you start the update right there. You see progress the whole way through, even if you reload the page, and if something goes wrong, the Web UI tells you what. If you don’t have enough free space, for example, you’ll see how much is needed and how much is available. And if a reinstall fails, Roon keeps running on the version you already had.

### Network Diagnostics

Network Diagnostics in the Web UI gives you a single-click view of your network’s current state. Under normal conditions you won’t need it, but it’s a good tool to have when something goes wrong:

### USB drives

Drives that weren’t safely ejected from Windows or macOS previously failed to mount, or needed manual intervention. exFAT and FAT32 drives in that state are now repaired automatically when they mount. NTFS volumes flagged as dirty now mount read-only rather than refusing to mount at all.

The Web UI also has a new USB Drives section that reports the current state of your external drives, and you can run **Check & Repair** (using the `fsck` tool, an analogue of Windows `chkdsk`) on a mounted drive directly from there.

This isn’t a substitute for a full disk check. If a drive keeps having problems, run a repair tool on it from your computer.

### Connecting to network storage

We also improved how RoonServer connects to SMB shares on your NAS or computer. RoonServer now tries SMB3 first, so shares on a NAS set to require encryption now mount and scan as expected.

A wrong password now counts as one failed login on your NAS instead of two, and Roon no longer retries every few seconds. Instead, it reports the problem once and tries again later, which helps keep your NAS from blocking RoonServer. Roon will also tell you more clearly when a share refuses your login, or when the database disk is full or can’t be written to.

One change to watch for with guest shares: a share added with a blank username and password now connects anonymously. If a guest share that used to work no longer connects, add it again with the username `guest`.

**Important:** You’ll need RoonServer running the latest production build (#1716) to get all of the network share improvements.

### File sharing: more control over the RoonOS Data share

RoonOS 3.0 moves file sharing from Samba 3 to Samba 4, a newer and more secure version. All your existing network folders carry over - you don’t need to reconfigure anything.

The Data share is also more configurable. You’ll find the new File Sharing section under Settings in the Web UI, with three options:

- **Guest access (default).** The Data share stays open on your local network, as it was in RoonOS 2.x. You don’t need to enter anything.

- **Username and password.** Turn on sign-in and set your own password. Guest access then turns off, and the share asks for your credentials on Mac and Windows. Your password is stored securely on the device.

- **SMB1 (optional).** Some older devices only speak the original SMB1 protocol. You can turn it on if you need it. It stays off by default because SMB1 is less secure.

Your File Sharing settings are kept after a reboot, an update, a reinstall, or signing in to Tailscale again. We’ve also hidden RoonOS system files, like the update state and the Tailscale key, from the Data share.

You can learn more about File Sharing in [this article](https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/roonos-web-administration-interface#File_Sharing).

### Tailscale

Tailscale now checks for new versions in the background. When one is available, the Web UI shows a notification, and you can update to the latest version yourself. The new version of Tailscale also installs automatically during the RoonOS 2.1 → 3.0 upgrade, after the OS reboots.

## Getting the update

More info about the update process can be found in [this article](https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/updating-nucleus).

Thanks to everyone who ran RoonOS 3.0 during Early Access and reported issues - this release is better for it.
