Trying to copy files from my windows computer to usb drives on my Rock/NUC. this cannot be done after i updated to Rock 3.0. File system is NTFS
What can be done about this?
Does it change if you click “Check & repair”?
Personally, I wouldn’t use the NTFS format with RoonOS - the combination has a history of being somewhat problematic.
It does not change.
Last thing to try is to put the drives back on a Windows PC and run Chkdsk on them. Don’t forget to eject them safely from Windows - don’t just pull the USB cable out.
Sounds like this change in OS 3.0
So, as @Geoff_Coupe said
It’s ok now, after a chkdsk on my computer. I will never touch the check/repair button again!
I think you should find a better solution for this issue. When Roon OS 3.0 goes live, you’ll get a lot of reactions on this. Just a heads up.
You didn’t say that you had, above?
It’s better now than it was before, up to RoonOS 2.x, when unclean NTFS drives weren’t touched at all and simply didn’t appear.
When using a proprietary file system like NTFS, this will always be a problem. The open source reimplementations simply don’t have enough information about the file system to be able to safely repair it.
So a read-only mount, as it does now in RoonOS 3.0, is probably as good as it gets if the drive is marked as unclean.
The RoonOS documentation has advised against using NTFS drives forever.
What file system is most recommended?
USB Storage - Best Practice
If you’re going to directly connect a USB drive to your Roon Server, you will have some options about how you want to format your drive.
We recommend USB drives connected to ROCK be formatted exFAT if you require compatibility, or EXT4 if you don’t.
Advantages of using exFAT include:
Cross-platform compatibility (macOS, Windows, Linux)
No real limits on drive size or file size
ROCK will also work with NTFS ,FAT32, and EXT2/3/4 drives, but if you are starting fresh with USB storage, our recommendation would be to use exFAT.
Moving my music files to my windows pc and back again. Have formatted my nuc usb drive with exFat. Now just waiting for 8 TB of files to be copyed. Hope all will be ok after this move.
Must be entertained, in the meantime, by playing my Roon playlists in Qubuz. Not the same as Roon!
