Summary

I am experiencing a serious stability problem with Roon Server running on my Mac mini M4.

Roon playback stops unexpectedly, and I have now confirmed that the problem is not limited to TIDAL or any particular streaming service.

More importantly, I have observed evidence that RoonServer itself is restarting unexpectedly, even when nobody is using Roon or playing music.

My System

* Roon Server: v2.71 (build 1683), production
* Operating system: macOS
* Roon Server computer: Mac mini M4
* Roon playback endpoint: WiiM Ultra
* DAC: Denafrips PONTUS 15th
* Network: wired home network
* Music sources tested: Local music and streaming services

What I have personally observed

Initially, I experienced Roon playback stopping unexpectedly while using streaming services.

To determine whether the problem was related to TIDAL or another streaming service, I deliberately tested Local music through Roon.

The Local music playback also stopped unexpectedly, in less than one hour.

The playback was simply running normally and then stopped. There was no user interaction that caused the stop.

This is important because Local playback uses my own music files and therefore demonstrates that the problem is not specific to TIDAL.

Evidence of RoonServer restarting by itself

I also found the following entry in the RoonServer log:

08/17 12:53:23 Info: Starting RoonServer v2.71 (build 1683) production on macosx

At that time, I was not at home and was not using Roon.

In fact, I had stopped playback before going to sleep the previous night. Nobody was operating Roon at 12:53 PM on August 17.

Therefore, this log entry indicates that RoonServer had restarted or been started again in the background without any user action.

This is particularly concerning because it means the RoonServer process may be terminating and restarting even when no music is being played.

Exception found in the logs

Earlier, I also found the following exception:

Exception Source: System.Net.Primitives

Exception Type: System.ArgumentException

Exception Target Site: IPEndPoint.Create

Exception Message:
“The supplied System.Net.SocketAddress is an invalid size for the System.Net.IPEndPoint end point.”

I also have the corresponding stack trace and can provide the complete log if required.

Why I believe this is a RoonServer stability problem

The following observations are consistent:

1. Playback can stop while playing TIDAL.
2. Local music playback can also stop unexpectedly.
3. RoonServer has subsequently been observed starting again by itself.
4. The server restart occurred even when nobody was at home and no music was playing.
5. The RoonServer logs contain a System.ArgumentException involving IPEndPoint.Create and an invalid SocketAddress size.

This makes me concerned that RoonServer may be encountering an unhandled exception and subsequently restarting.

I am not claiming that the exception is definitively the root cause. I would like Roon’s engineering team to investigate whether this exception is responsible for the RoonServer process terminating or restarting.

What I would like Roon Technical Support to investigate

Please investigate:

1. Whether the System.ArgumentException involving IPEndPoint.Create is a known issue in Roon Server v2.71 build 1683 on macOS.
2. Whether this exception can cause RoonServer to terminate or restart.
3. Whether there is a known networking, discovery, or socket-related issue that can trigger this exception.
4. Whether this issue has been fixed in a newer Roon build or whether a workaround is available.
5. Whether you need the complete RoonServer logs or crash reports from my Mac mini.

I have already spent considerable time troubleshooting my network and playback equipment. The fact that Local playback also fails, combined with RoonServer restarting without user interaction, makes me believe this needs to be investigated at the RoonServer software level.

Please let me know if you need the complete stack trace, RoonServer logs, or macOS crash reports.

Thank you.

Hello @Jordan_Chen

Thank you for the report. It is one of the clearest we have received, and it has gone straight to where it needed to go.

To confirm what you suspected: yes, that exception is terminating Roon Server. Your logs make it conclusive rather than probable. There are 20 occurrences and 20 restarts of Roon Server in the same window, and every rotated log file ends in the middle of that stack trace with the next one beginning at startup. So the server is dying at the instant it is thrown, and the playback stopping is a consequence of that rather than a separate problem. It is unrelated to Tidal, to local files, and to anything you were doing, which is why it also happened while you were away.

We know about this problem and it is being worked on. It is with our engineering team now, and your case has been added to it with the full traces.

There is nothing further you need to do, and no more logs or crash reports are needed, we have everything.

Please keep an eye on our release notes for the build that carries the fix. We are closing this thread here. If the crashes continue after a release that addresses it, please start a new thread and link back to this one so the history stays together.
