Ropieee installation problem on Raspberry Pi 5

I’m having trouble installing Ropieee on a Raspberry Pi 5. I’ve successfully installed it on a Raspberry Pi 4 in the past and it’s been working well for several years.

Here’s how I’ve proceeded so far.

  • Connected Raspberry pi 5 to my network with cable
  • Flashed the latest Ropieee image to a micro SD card (ropieee_pi5-2026.4.0-stable.20260410.3474.bin) with the Balena Etcher and plugged the card into the RPI 5.
  • Powered up Raspberry Pi 5 (with the official Raspberry Pi 5 power converter)
  • I see the indicator light blink from red to green

Waited an hour and the image doesn’t appear to load correctly as it never gets to the slow red/green blink stage and I cant access it at the link (http://ropieee.local). The indicator does slowly blink to red from green, but on a much longer cycle than every second or so). Also, I don’t see the ethernet connector lights flashing (like an installation I have on a Raspberry Pi 4).

So I’m wonder if the ethernet connection isn’t working properly?

I tried restarting power and no change in behavior.

I’ve performed the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Swapped ethernet cable
  • Moved the set up to a different ethernet switch closer to the router
  • Swapped SD card
  • Flashed image with Raspberry Pi imager
  • Swapped Raspberry Pi 5 board
  • Let the unit run overnight

The problem symptoms stay the same (green indicator on and blinks to red occasionally). I’m not sure what to try next. My only experience with this is setting up Ropieee on a Raspberry Pi 4 a number of years ago and that went without a hitch.

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next?

Do you see a network on you wifi? Starting with ‘ropieeee-’?

I checked the wifi networks with my phone (google pixel) and don’t see any network starting with ropieee)

Ok. I just checked the image, just to be sure. But the image works.
So:

  • do you have an SD card that is large enough? (8 GB)
  • can you reflash? and try again?
  • is there a way you can connect a monitor?

The SD cards I’ve tried are 32GB and 128GB.

I tried reflashing the file (ropieee_pi5-2026.4.0-stable.20260410.3474.bin), and waited 45 min. No change in symptoms. I used Balena etcher this time. The previous attempt was with Raspberry pi imager.

I don’t have an HDMI to micro HDMI cable, but I will get one at a local store in a couple of hours when they open.

So what happens initially? Is there something flashing?
And network is still dead? no leds?

When power is applied, the led by the power connector turns on red for about 3 seconds and then turns steady green for about a minute, then turns red for about 3 seconds and then back to green. This pattern repeats. As far as I can tell, the leds on the ethernet connector never turn on.

Is this with the 32 gb or 128 gb

Do you have a HAT connected or something else?

No, just power and ethernet are connected

The store is open now that sells the micro HDMI to HDMI cable. Should I go get one?

Weird. It should work (as it works on my end). The led pattern is strange…

Can you download the RoPieee Network Installer? Shouldn’t make a difference, but I’m just curious.
On which OS do you flash the SD card?

I flashed the Ropieee network installer (ropieee_net_installer-20260410.3476.bin) and it appears to be behaving the same. I’m using an HP windows 11 desktop that’s a couple of years old. I have a windows 11 laptop. Would it make sense to try using that? Would it make sense to try an older Ropieee version?

No, I don’t think so…
This is really weird. Would love to see the initial screen.

Older version is possible of course, but that does not help me figuring out what’s going on :wink:

Ok… I think what’s going on. I’m preparing a new build.

I got the cable and took a couple of screen shots as the text was scrolling up at power up. I got everything that came up in two screen shots that overlap contents. After that screen finished, the monitor was just dark except for a U-Boot submarine in the upper right corner.
