Ropieee XL Update WIFI dongle issue

Harry - Unique identifier: a1aefb42c127fcf6
I attempted an upgraded to 2.596, during the upgrade it seemed to hang. I had the previous version 2.4?? working with a Edimax USB dongle EW-7811UTC. I was able to reboot with a wired connection, seemed to upgrade ok but I could not get get the WIFI dongle to work.

I downloaded a new image and got the current version working but have been unable to get the WIFI dongle working (see screen shot). I get an Error 0 and cannot select any WIFI network. I was able to to get the internal WIFI working (RaspPi 3 Model B).

Not sure the exact process for adding the dongle. Any insights or help would be appreciated.
John

Hmmm… there’s some initialisation issue with the external dongle.

Can you do the following (with cable connected):

  • disable WiFi
  • save settings and reboot
  • enable WiFi
  • save settings
  • DON’T REBOOT
  • send feedback

Thanks Harry.

I followed the steps, here is the identifier

John

Thanks.

And now reboot and another feedback?

This is so weird. The wifi card is failing to come up properly. Which in itself is not weird, but that it worked in the past is.

I’m going to update the driver this weekend. I’ll poke you when that’s done, so we can see if things improve.

Thanks

hi @John_Dutt,

I’ve updated the wifi driver in the beta channel.
You can switch to the beta channel on the ‘advanced’ tab of the web interface.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Hi Harry
Thanks for your work on this.

I did the update 2.601 beta. When the upgrade completed, I selected enable WIFI, re-booted with the same result.

John

Can you confirm it’s this one?

If so I’ll order one to test with it, because I’ve got no clue why it doesn’t do what it should do.

Thanks

Harry - yes, that is the USB Dongle.

Would it make sense to attempt a reflash with your beta image? Second, I have a RPi3 B (no internal WIFI) that I could also try and if unsuccessful provide you the output?

John

No reflashing won’t work I think. Somehow it has picked the right driver, but configuring it goes wrong.

I’ve already ordered it, will arrive in 2 days. I’ll keep you posted.

@John_Dutt Can you try one more thing?

I’ve pushed an update to the beta channel and I’m curious if this fixes things for you.

Thanks

Sure, I’ll give it a whirl!

No change. Here is the output: 790e96e1e34f7f2a.

Below I put the output of >dmesg -T. I assume your file provides you this information, nonetheless…
I noticed several usb device numbers, thought it worth noting…John

Hi @John_Dutt,

Adapter arrived. I was able to reproduce and fix your issue, so there’s an update on the beta channel right now.

Thanks

Thanks Harry, works without a hitch! Great stuff! Really appreciate it!
John
