Hello @John_Wyant,

Thanks for your question.

The Nucleus is compatible with almost any 2.5-inch SATA SSD or HDD for internal storage.

We generally recommend formatting the drive to exFAT for the best cross-platform compatibility, though the Nucleus can also format the drive for you directly via its web administration interface.

While we don’t officially endorse specific brands, any standard 2.5" SATA drive from a reputable manufacturer (such as Samsung, Crucial, or Western Digital) will work perfectly. The choice ultimately depends on your storage capacity needs and budget.

Thanks.

In addition, for an internal drive for a Nucleus, you don’t need to spend more getting a drive with longer wear resistance. Typically, the storage drive will be written to once and then read many, many times so wear resistance is not an issue.

Within the Samsung SSD range, this means that, whilst the EVO range of SATA SSD’s is undoubtedly the better SSD for general use, for the specific purpose of installing as internal storage in the the Nucleus, the QVO range is perfectly adequate if you can get it cheaper.

Useful information and thanks. The Nucleus one is replacing my Nucleus plus which failed after a power outage. I’m not going to bother with a repair on the Nucleus plus as I heard that the replacement circuit boards are no longer available. What a shame as I also have a linear power supply which will go to waste as well. I think they call that planned obsolescence?

Does your old Nucleus Plus have an internal SSD? If so you could consider reusing it in the new Nucleus One - certainly if it has plenty of spare capacity.

Moving the SSD in this way would preserve the contents of the SSD (it should not need reformatting) and thus avoid the need to copy your music files to a new SSD.

Thanks again for your advice. The Nucleus plus does indeed have an internal SSD. I did not realize that it could be reused in the Nucleus One. I will definitely check it out and maybe save myself a lot of time and money.

I’m thinking that my somewhat expensive linear power supply might also be used with the Nucleus One? It puts out 20 volts DC, but I’m not sure about the amps. I’ll measure the voltage on the new Nucleus One power supply with my trusty fluke multimeter and compare. Any advice about that?

The voltage and maximum current of the Nucleus One power supply should be printed on the power supply itself. It would be better to use that information rather than try and measure the output.

Having said that, the Nucleus is only a mini PC in pretty clothing and the merits of an upgraded power supply are somewhat doubtful - especially it you use Ethernet or WiFi connected endpoints (as opposed to USB or HDMI) with their own power supply.

My present power supply for the nucleus plus came with the nucleus plus in a package deal used. I had heard that the upgraded supply made no difference in sound quality of the nucleus plus. I will probably stick with the stock power supply, and find another use for the upgraded supply.
Anyway, thanks for the good advice.
