Samsung Z flip6 freezes when room is running. Model SM-F741U1 Android V14, One UI V 6.1.1. I believe the problem is with One UI. I've had the phone replaced, uninstalled / rebooted / reinstalled Room and the problem persists. Room works fine on my Z flip4 and my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
Describe your network setup
Not applicable. All other functions are fine on all other devices.
Can you please let us know the exact local time + date when you notice the next freeze? After receiving this info, we’ll enable diagnostics mode and then the next time the Flip6 is online after that, it should deliver logs for analysis. Let us know, thanks!
The freeze occurs after the phone goes to sleep, sometimes it takes as much as 30-45 minutes and several “wake-ups” before it manifests. When it happens, the phone won’t wake up, not even to answer a call. I suspect the UI app is somehow being blocked. Perhaps a memory overlap?
Thank you for the clarification. We’ve identified the event in logs and development has a ticket in the pipeline. We’ll post here as soon as we have further information to share.
In the meantime, the APK might behave differently than the Play-Store loaded version of the app. Try installing the APK version of the app directly from our downloads page, if you’re willing to give it a try. Let us know if this changes the behavior.
In any case, we’ll follow up as soon as possible with next steps. Thank you again!
Thanks for checking so thoroughly @Joshua_Walfish and we’re sorry this issue continues to plague your Flip6.
Just to confirm (in Roon, not ARC) - how do you regain control of the UI after encountering the freeze? Do you have to turn the phone on/off?
If you’re willing to take a few extra steps to collect ADB level logging from the phone, it will help expedite our developers’ investigation into the issue.
Connect your PC to Android phone and install ADB (instructions are here (all platforms)). Then:
Hi. Sorry for not responding sooner, I needed some time to run upstairs to my office and fire up the laptop, setup developer mode and download adb.
Regaining control entails pressing and holding the power button for about 5-ish seconds, wait for the Edge panel to appear, expand it and press any button. This procedure needs to be repeated several times until the power menu appears. It often helps to select any app in the Edge panel. Eventually, the UI will start to reawaken and ocassionally there will be an error displayed that One UI keeps crashing. Restarting the phone in Safe mode and then restarting again in standard mode will usually clear the problem for several hours.
After downloading ADB and setting my phone to developer mode, connecting my phone to the PC and launching ADB, I realized that I don’t have a reliable way to consistently reproduce the problem for the purposes of capturing the log data for you. This, due to the fact that sometimes my phone will work for an hour or so before freezing on wakeup, when Roon is running.
NB: I used to manage Testing Tools for a few large corporations (talking Fortune 50), and I setup and ran mobile device test labs for them. We used H, Perfecto, Sauce Labs and a few others, with physical devices both on and off-site, as well as virtual. Even with our enormous budgets, we still had limits on the number and types of devices we could budget for acquisition / access and the number of docking stations we could support. I have to imagine your budget is way more restrictive (constrictive, LOL). What does your engineering team employ for mobile device development and testing?
I’d be willing to offer some assistance with Alpha or Beta testing, or even virtual tethering, if it will help.
Thank you for your diligent response and our apologies for the delay.
Intermittent issues are especially difficult to capture and we truly appreciate your gracious offer to help us pin this one down. The most we could ask is to try to connect to ADB after the problem next occurs; ideally the UI freeze event itself will be retained.
Eventually, we’ll release a fix in Early Access where our QA team can answer more specific questions related to software/hardware testing. If you’re interested in signing up for the test group, it’s as simple as migrating your RoonServer to the EA branch. See here for more details:
We’ll keep you posted on our efforts to reproduce this in-housel; so far, we haven’t experienced the problem during testing on the Z Flip6 we have on a bench. ADB logs after the next freeze event - whenever that might occur and you happen to be in a convenient position to connect the phone - will ideally help clarify. We’ll keep trying on our end.
Thank you again for your ongoing patience. At this time, no fix for this issue has been released, but as mentioned above, we have an investigative ticket in the pipeline to generate a potential blind fix.
Are you still reproducing this issue with frequency on the affected Flip6?
Connect your PC to Android phone and install ADB (instructions are here (all platforms)). Then:
I’ve been avoiding running Roon on my V6, been using my V4 with no issues. I haven’t had time to spend on this, as my turntable / tonearm service and restoration business has gotten very busy recently. Too bad we werent trying this in November / December, as it was very quiet. At present I’m running a 4 week backlog on customer projects.
I’ll try to find some time this week.
Sorry, I know analog is enemy number 1 for you guys )
