Schitt Bifrost Multibit

Anybody here have experience with this DAC?

I will be running Roon thru my 2016 Mac Mini with SSD and my library on an external HDD.

Currently using DAC in Oppo 103 to Cambridge Audio dvr via HDMI. Would like to decrease/eliminate digital harshness/hash in playback.

Bifrost MB seems to fit the bill.

Thanks,

MIKE

The Bifrost Multibit does pretty well in what you are looking for if fed by a clean source. As of a couple of weeks ago, it comes with the Gen 5 USB board that has extensive insulation and reclocking to address the weaknesses of USB audio. This upgrade has had many positive reviews. Mine is still the older version (about to send it in for an upgrade) so I used a variety of isolation/reconditioning methods to reduce the negative impact of USB. But the new version apparently does not need any of that, its Gen 5 board seems to block USB-carried electrical noise effectively.

I have pretty well made up my mind to get the Multibit.

Can’t afford or justify 3 grand for a DAC.

With the Bifrost, I can connect with and switch between USB, coax, and toslink.

I am playing hi res files, ripped SACDs/DVD-As, CDs ripped to FLAC and now Tidal. Not enough hours in the day.

Thanks for your input, Fernando!

None of the Schiit dacs are 3k. To me the Gunganir multibit seems good value at $1249.

Mike:

I just had a Bifrost Multibit with the Gen. 5 USB arrive at my door on Tuesday. Like all Schiit products (I have several), it’s built like a tank and has some pretty fantastic engineering in it. The multibit DACs in particular are not just another re-iteration of off-the-shelf parts, but innovative and original designs.

The next best thing is the $1249 Gungnir Multibit, which I also have because I wanted a balanced input to my main amplifier/speaker setup. Both are extremely detailed, smooth and have a nearly holographic sound stage like I’ve never heard from anything else.

After the price point of the Bifrost Multibit, and especially if you don’t need balanced outputs, you’re going to find something not unlike a brick wall in terms of diminishing returns on money spent, where devices begin to look like sculpted decorative objects and the cost of the chassis is many, many times that of the parts inside.

And it’s upgradable.

I’ve got a Bifrost Multibit that I’ve had for about a year and a half. Where can I find out more info on this Gen 5 upgrade?

I know that Schitt makes “better” DACs than the Bifrost Multibit.

But after 10 years of retirement, I have learned to restrain my enthusiasm for new toys. $600 is fine; $1200 is probably over the line.

My related equipment is slightly north of mid-fi, well short of SOTA. Just like my 70+ year old ears. I expect the Bifrost MB will more than do the job I ask of it. I don’t need balanced outputs (I have that feature on pre/pro and power amp separates, but I don’t use it), so that upgrade is unnecessary.

I think the Gen 5 usb feature pretty much cinches my choice. I will be ordering in a couple of weeks,

My thanks to all!
