Description Of Issue
Is it me, but has the Search functionality slowed down over the last month or so?
It can sometimes take quite a while to search on an Artist or track name.

I don’t believe it is release related, as there hasn’t been a release lately - is it a database on ROCK size, table size or is the searching Tidal and/or Qobuz?
It shouldn’t be internet speed related either as that been upgraded recently to 500Mbs down/50Mbs up.

Maybe things will be improved with the next release. Happy to beta test.

Simon.

Hi @simon_pepper,

Are you experiencing this slowness with every search, or only some?

If you reboot your Core are things any faster?

It is all searches, whether for Artists or track names.
Yes, following a reboot is a little faster, but presently it has been 9-days since ROCK was last rebooted.

Is there a problem with Search speed after ROCK has been up for an extended period? Are their resource leaks that are causing the slow down - with any root access I can’t give you anymore - a htop listing, mtrace/malloc or even a free -m

Thanks,
Simon.

Hi @simon_pepper,

Can you provide some specifics on a few different searches that are slow? For each search, please provide the following:

  • The exact text string used to search
  • The time in your local timezone that the search was started
  • How many seconds the search takes
  • How many seconds the search takes if you search the same string right after

Thanks!

Will do, once I am home.
Thanks, Simon.

Does this help?
If you need any other tests or search instances run let me know.

My observation is there is potentially an issue when ROCK server has been up for a number of days, in that the search of the database tables is affected, with a search going from 20s down to 2s on restarting the Roon server or rebooting the ROCK hardware.

Simon.

Sorry this was meant to be earlier, but the Lotto service in Kenya, had an outage and came back up 20 minutes before the Wednesday evening draw, and there were some 4,500 outstanding Mobile Money purchases of Lotto tickets not processed, plus just before the draw volumes can several thousand purchases per minute - so it was all hands on trying to get them into the Draw before cut off and the Live draw on TV there.
Plus our VPN from Dublin to the Safaricom datacentre has been a bit flaky lately.
All good fun!

Was this useful?
Do you need any further measurements or metrics?

Thanks for the timestamps here, @simon_pepper.

I’ve enabled diagnostics on your account so the team can take a closer look at what was occurring during these times. The next time your Core is active a Diagnostics Report will be uploaded to our servers and I’ll be sure to pass it along to the team. Once the team has analyzed the report I’ll be sure to follow up with you here.

I think my Core was active over the weekend - do you have a Diagnostic Report.
At present the search times are ok - I think it is well there has been a long uptime on the Roon server.
The time I took before were after 9 days of up-time, and these dramatically reduced once the Server was restarted.
I have also experienced problems with page loading errors from the Core when there is uptime of 30-days or so. These are not present after a reboot of the ROCK server.
Thanks, Simon.

Hi @simon_pepper,

I spoke with the team about the behavior you’re seeing and they reviewed the diagnostics report. The report was helpful in allowing us to better understand the underlying issues you’re experiencing.

As mentioned here in this post by Mike, we have some significant changes on the way related to how search performs in Roon. We can’t provide any specific timeframes as these are some pretty big changes, but we believe that things will perform much better once these changes are available.

We appreciate your patience here as work continues on this project.

Sure - if you need anything else, especially as uptime on the Rock Server is presently 8 days, to similar to where I experienced the 30s or so, on the initial searches.

If you also need me to test any build I can.

Looking forward to these next release(s)

Simon.
