I can’t see the correlation to your recommended list neither.
But i just wanted to say “i like your taste in music”! :sweat_smile:

However, for the sake of argument, what do you recommend to someone whose taste is equal metal and symphonic progrock?
Other than the obvious Tool and Dream Theater but those were already there. To complicate things, you throw in som Alanis Morisette and Dead Can Dance as well!

I listen in phases and my “digital” listening differ from my living room habits which are much more “all over the place” than this list, which is predominantly metal. I’ll have a Dream Theater phase and listen to that predominantly, or weeks of nostalgia and I’ll go over all my 80’s and 90’s favorite metal albums. This was my goth/doom phase :upside_down_face:

It could suggest Metallica. Pearl Jam. The Mars Volta. But maybe it filters that because there are already albums from those artists in my library?

I really don’t know. There is really literally nothing in my library that would even remotely suggest Malia, Yello or Billy Eilish. AC/DC and Beck I can understand based on my library, my listening habits not so much.

When I go to recommended artists, it makes a little more sense, but even there are really weird suggestions. There is some rock, no metal, almost all is jazz. This list seems to be solely based on some select names I have in my library, rather than my listening habits. It looks really biased.

I don’t know how the algorithms work either, but i have seen there is some emphasis on country of origin, genre labels and some weight on the period where it originated.

Do you have a big library? Both local and from Tidal?

My recommendations are okay, as far as i know (haven’t heard all of them, naturally)

I’d say my listening patterns are not dissimilar to yours, however, the only growl i listen to are Opeths discography, but lots of Tool, Genesis. Where we differ is that i listen to Yello, Infected Mushroom and Younger Brother, Shpongle as well as everything triphop-related!

Thanks guys but respectfully, I didn’t post this because I wanted recommendations. We’re in the feedback section :wink: and I posted this about the system behind recommendations.

I am genuinely interested into why these recommendations are made, the system behind it and whether I and community in general can help improve it.

so I once (a long time ago if memory serves me right) skimmed through some of Tricky’s tracks, looking for something that tickles me the same way Massive Attack’s Mezzanine does. It didn’t and I am pretty sure I never finished playing a single song from this guy and skipped them all. I never looked back. Now it’s recommending it which, IMO it shouldn’t.

This explains where that Yello and Mailia comes from from the OP. There is nothing is like Dead Can Dance, and these aren’t even the closest thing out there, so this seems to be an algorithm being off. Perhaps this is a “people who like this, also listens to that” kind of recommendation? A system that really never worked for me.

So, decent recommendations are possible, I just have to dig deeper.

Seems like things could be tuned here and there. I make assumptions here:

  • don’t recommend based on other peoples’ listening habits
  • don’t recommend based on 1 play and skipped tracks

It would be ideal if these would be user configurable, because for a lot of people recommendations based on other peoples’ listening habits, actually works.

That was the first thing I reported when I was testing the Daily Picks. To at least limit them by Profile, that way I wouldn’t get Celine Dion based on my partner’s listening habits.

I don’t really agree with this. I agree that if a track has not been played to 100% (which Roon keeps track of in history) then it should be removed from consideration. But, if I’ve played 1 track to a 100%, then I want that track’s artist to be a valid selection option for Daily Picks.

Sure. You do, I don’t. That’s why I suggested individual profile settings.

I can play a random playlist, or get nostalgic and listen to Michael Jackson and Prince from my teen years. Doesn’t mean I want recommendations for them today.

How can a piece of software know that you are just nostalgic when you play Michael Jackson and Prince and not recommend anything related to these artists?

Good question. Simple answer. It can’t. And I don’t expect it to.

But what it can do is detect patterns. And this one is simple. Play something thats never played before, start skipping, never play it again. Don’t recommend that. Unless your name is Rugby of course :slight_smile: . But seriously, I plea for user customizable system. Toggle on/off recommend single play tracks? Problem solved.

Right now the only place where I see I can provide feedback is radio, thumbs up / down. I don’t see how I can influence the system on music in my library. As far as I can see it treats it all equally important, and it imposes its own bias (I see so much jazz in recommendations its crazy, while I only have a few select albums and I rarely play them).

Right now the system is mostly useless for some people. With a few simple tweaks it could be made so much better.
