Not sure the folder from my macbook pro got uploaded completely to dropbox. How large of a memory stick or SD card is needed to copy full backup folder?

Hi @tksteingraber,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the backup restore details. If you used the Dropbox method to make the backup, please download the entire folder to an external drive before restoring, and use the drive as an in-between, do not try to restore directly from Dropbox. Let us know if that helps with the issue.

How much memory is required for the drive?

Does uploading it into roon also load the backup into my server and store future backups in the server? This is all new to me. Tks

Hi @tksteingraber,

Sorry for the wait, and happy to clear both of those up.

Drive size: Roon backups scale with your library size and how many backup sets have accumulated, but most land in the 1–5 GB range. To know for sure, right-click the backup folder in Finder or Dropbox and check Get Info. Whatever it shows, a 32 GB or larger USB stick gives you plenty of headroom.

One thing worth checking first on a Mac: if Dropbox is keeping those files “online only,” the folder can look complete in Finder while the actual data still sits in the cloud, and that is a very common cause of the exact error you’re seeing. Right-click the backup folder, choose Make Available Offline, wait until every file shows a green check, then drag the whole folder to the drive. Copy it as-is, without renaming anything inside it or pulling out individual files.

What restoring does: The restore reads that folder and writes your library back into Roon Server’s own database: edits, playlists, play history, and settings. The backup folder is only the source. Once the restore finishes you can unplug the drive, and Roon has no further need for it.

Future backups are a separate setting. After the restore completes, go to Settings → Backups and confirm a scheduled backup is in place and check where it points. That location is yours to pick, an external drive or a network share both work well. We’d avoid pointing it at the same drive that holds the Roon Server database, since a single drive failure would then take out both.

One question on our end: is the restore going back onto the same MacBook Pro, or onto a different machine?

If it still errors out after copying the folder locally, grab a screenshot of the message along with the folder name as it appears on the drive, and we’ll take it from there.

Thank you Benjamin! I cannot get Dropbox to work or my sonictransporter with 1TB internal storage to display as a path choice on the network. I was able to use an external drive to transfer plugged into my Sonictransporter and store my Roon backups. An ongoing issue I still would like to solve is to have the automated backups to work instead of doing them on demand. Tom

Hi @tksteingraber,

Glad the external drive solved the backup transfer. For the scheduled backup issue, can you let us know the exact local time and date when it fails next? We will enable diagnostics mode for your account and check for clues in the logging.

Below is a copy of my issues. My Sonictransporter internal storage drive error and now my external drive music playing message when I am sleeping and not playing ant music in roon. Only success is manually requesting backup.

Hey @tksteingraber, thanks for the screenshot, the timestamps let us pinpoint both failures in your Roon Server logs.

Internal storage: the scheduled backup is pointed at /storage/music/playlist/RoonBackups, but on your sonicTransporter the internal drive is mounted as InternalStorage, so Roon can’t find that folder. It isn’t a drive fault. Please delete that scheduled backup and add a new one, choosing the InternalStorage drive in the folder browser rather than going through “/”. We’d also suggest keeping the external drive as your main backup, since a copy on the same device won’t help if the sonicTransporter itself fails.

External drive: at 2:01 AM on 9/18, Roon Radio was still playing to your Signature Rendu SE. It had kept going on its own after your queue ended around 10:30 PM, and it didn’t stop until about 2:09 AM. Roon won’t start a backup while music is playing, so the message was accurate. The good news is that the next night’s scheduled backup to your Seagate drive (9/19 at 2:00 AM) completed successfully. To avoid this in the future, you can pause or stop playback before bed, turn off Roon Radio under Settings → Playback, or move the backup to a time when you’re sure nothing will be playing.

Let us know once the internal storage backup is re-added and we’ll confirm the next run in the logs.

@Benjamin, Thank you for the assistance and detailed update. I must have inadvertently left Roon playing overnight.

I have not been able to set up the Sonictransporter internal drive as a backup. It does not display when I browse in Roon. Only Dropbox displays and when my external Seagate drive is plugged in it displays as a choice but no internal Sonictransporter drive path.

Any insight on how to get the internal drive to display?

I will plan to continue to use my external drive for backups.

Here are some screen shots of my issue.

Hey @tksteingraber, thanks for the screenshots and the clarification about the overnight playback.

Backups are not recommended in locations that Roon is watching under Settings > Storage, because Roon can end up scanning the backup itself and that can cause problems. On a lot of systems, the entire drive is added as a watched location, so the backup folder may not show up the way you expect.

We also see that you plan to keep using your external drive for backups, which is a sensible approach here. Let us know if you want us to take another look at the folder setup.

Hey @tksteingraber,

Wanted to follow up on this. Were you able to check the backup folder setup we mentioned, so it is not sitting inside a location Roon is watching under Settings > Storage? If you want us to take another look at how that external drive is laid out, send us an update and we can review it with you.
