My Roon Server runs on an inexpensive Windows 11 HP laptop and external 5 TB HD. This setup works fine. However, the laptop fan runs loudly, and the drive feels warm. My first experiment – launched today – is four stick-on feet for each device. I hope to improve airflow and cooling. I took care not to cover any vent holes, product labels, or access screws.

If that’s not enough, there are laptop stands with built-in (large and hence rather silent) fans at Amazon starting at about 15 euros

Good advice from @Suedkiez .
Also, make sure that windows is not trying to index that drive. You can add it as an excluded root for the indexing service.
