Short Dropout on Some Tracks

Roon Core Machine

Rock Intel NUC i7 12XX, 64 gb RAM, 512 GB system drive

Networking Gear & Setup Details

AT&T Fiber, 1 Gig service, cat8 ethernet cable from Modem/Router to Rock

Connected Audio Devices

Okto Research Dac8 Stereo, connected to Rock via USB cable

Number of Tracks in Library

5k tracks

Description of Issue

During playback of Tidal or Qobuz, but not local library tracks, there is often a brief dropout (skip) somewhere between 8 and 14 seconds in. This has been happening for months. Have made multiple upgrades and changes to topology of the system, but nothing has changed. Originally had a Roon Core connected via ethernet to a Bluesound, then to a Lumin U1 Mini. Then upgraded to the Rock connected via ethernet to Lumin. Then to my current configuration. Tried different ethernet cables and different USB cables. Nothing seems to resolve it. It seems to occur more if you ‘demand’ a track as opposed to letting them play in the queue, but not always. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Please try Lumin app playback of Tidal / Qobuz, or Tidal app via Tidal Connect to Lumin.

  • In router, set DNS to 8.8.8.8, then reboot the Roon Core and all audio devices

Dropout occurs with Lumin using Lumin app and Qobuz.
AT&T does not allow the changing of the Modem/Router DNS.

Since you have no dropouts with local files, and the dropout is also occuring with the Lumin app and Qobuz I think you have to look no further than an internet connectivity issue.

Have you tried rebooting your router?

Router has been rebooted several times. It’s 1 gigabit connection, so I doubt a connector issue. Remember, it almost only happens at the beginning of tracks selected for immediate playback, not tracks paying in a queue.

Unfortunately even a 1 Gb connection could have an issue. There are many factors that could reduce the actual throughput. The reason I was thinking network connectivity is the fact that both Roon and the Lumin app display this behavior. In other words, it is quit likely that there is a common factor that affects both. Network connectivity would be an obvious suspect.

Perhaps you can run a speed test from a wired computer. Just to rule it out. I would be especially curious to see how the connection speed evolves during the test.

Try toi reboot the core server every night.
It solves the same issue. I dont know what was the cause but now it works

See if you have an IPv6 setting in the router. Try turning it off then reboot the whole network of devices including Roon Core.

Turned off IPv6 and restarted the modem/router. Restarted the Rock. Dropout still occurs.

Just noticed something: the dropout only seems to happen with Qobuz. I have yet to hear it with Tidal. I’ll keep using Tidal tonight and see if I can ‘break’ it.

No dropouts on Tidal. The dropouts on Qobuz seem to have stopped since I set the Rock DNS to 8.8.8.8
