Showing (off) your Roon setup - description and photos [2024]

It’s been a while…

I will oblige

Here we have a CarPlay head unit of unknown make or model. Its specification is a mystery.

Speakers, goodness knows what they are. Goes loud enough for my mobile office. There’s 2 of 5” mid/bass drivers and 2 of 1” soft some tweeters.

The covers are integrated and cannot be removed. I swear they are blocking some of the resolution.

Cables are as you’d expect, rubbish automotive cables. One cable does all. Terminated with nasty spade crimped connectors (pure guess as I cannot see them).

Sound quality is sublime. It’s like having the artist in the van with me. Agnes Obel’s sweet voice tickling my ear drums. Amazeballs

it’s taken six years to get this room/system right, but yea, verily, do I believe it is done now.

I need to do a standalone post about the evolution of MY listening room. there have been 10+ iterations, but we have arrived at a similar, but much more refined, place from where we started:

Silent Angel M1T
Quad VA-One+
Zu Audio DW6, basic version in cherry-rubbed walnut finish

Some news on the streaming part of my (mainly analogue) setup:

Bottom left Nucleus+ with Win11 23H2 for greatly improved performance over RoonOS. (Okay, there are some tweaks implemented also, but it gained new life, definently)

Top left is the “Lunar module” as i call it, the IAN Canada TransportPi AES. Se a few posts above for details…
It feeds the Denafrips Ares II via it’s galvanically separated Coax SPDIF output. But it also feeds the Regal DAC101 via AES/EBU and through it’s BNC output.
Both DAC’s feed my pre so i can switch between volume matched DACs on the fly.
The Regal DAC101 is brand new, so needs a bit of settling in. Sounding very nice from take off though!

Couple of pics of where I am at with my main 2 channel electronics right now. I am still building my new rack. Hopefully will be doing dry fit work next week. Michi X3, Eversolo DMP-6, MusicHall MMF1.5

This is in the basement.
NUC running latest version of ROCK with 2TB internal Drive. The USB Drive is for backups.
A Parasound Zdacv1 for the whole house speakers. Amps are several Sonance 45’s. The old red MusicStreamer DAC is for the hot tub zone. :grinning:

I almost got the Michi X5, how do you like it?

I love the grip and power it has on my Dali’s. Much preferred over the class D setup I had for a short time. The X5 would have been even more overkill than the 3 for the size of my space. I only use 2 or 3 inputs on it at most so there are more functions than I will ever use. The V2 model is out so you can probably get a great deal on a V1.

I looked at the V1s Michi preamps, and was close to getting one, only to realised how truely massive it is, and I could not accomodate the size. The V1s seem to be around half price in the UK from various outlets. I ended up getting the NAD M66, which has been excellent so far.

Yes, it is huge. I had to redesign the new rack I am building to accommodate it. I do love the clean and elegant design.

How do you like the M66? I was thinking of getting it, but the preamp section seems to be the weakest link. All the reviews seesm to be promotional pieces, except Darko’s which was (it is as often) more cryptic…which is never a good sign with reviews who is concerned about their advertising income.

The M66 is a pre amp
His conclusion is hardly cryptic (around 25 mins) ‘the best sound ever…’ (ish)

I had a long search, and was originally aiming for something without a screen or without dirac, however the more I looked my choices seemed to dwindle. The M66 was on the list but nowhere near the front due to its cost. Anyway, I arranged with my local hifi dealer to borrow one. It plays nicely with my M23 power-amp. The Blueos app is good and links well with Roon. I can link to my local NAS for local playback. The remote is built like a tank, I love it (a real weakpoint on my previous pre-amp). Dirac is great and quite straight forwards, although I have dabled with REW in the past. The only thing I did not like was the somewhat lacking paper-work (I have been spoilt by my desktop RME ADI-2 DAC Fs, which has a very complete and massive manual), and also the price. I had to sell some kit, and save a bit, but other that that, I really like it!

Well, turns out the McIntosh was not for me after all. After a while I realised it sounded like an old EL34 guitar amp - which I guess is great for some, but not my taste. So, it’s been replaced with a Benchmark AHB2 and DAC3 HGC. I agree with anyone else, this is a keeper! I’ve still got to fix the cable management, but here it is (and a bit harder to spot than the Mc too):

Loving the easel TV stand, and the 802s. (The whole thing really!)

Thanks  I like the simplicity and openness.

I had B&W for over 20 years (and still do - even if it’s ‘just’ a PV1D subwoofer) - there’s a bit of me misses my old 804S… [these left two or three years ago now]
