Describe the issue

Single CD’s are being split into two and only showing some songs on one or the other folders. Not in sequential order making non-gap playing unavailable

Describe your network setup

Cable internet service by spectrum, Ethernet connection through a wired network switch to a Qnap NAS 1gps speed with TP Links router

Are you editing your embedded tags using a tag editor like Mp3tag or Yate?

I don’t have a clue on what you said. I guess I’m a newbie for this stuff. I have no idea what Mp3tag or Yate is. I don’t think I’ve done anything to “embed” tags in anything that I’ve done. My music files are red book or DSD on my NAS drive. I haven’t changed anything on the files that I know of.

Ah. Ok. So, music files of all formats can be enhanced with additional data (called “metadata”) that includes all sorts of information about the music contained within.

Roon can best manage and interpret your music files when you’ve enhanced your files with this metadata.

There are many nice and inexpensive pieces of software you can use to “groom” this metadata. What desktop computing platform do you prefer? Yate is highly recommended for macOS and Mp3tag is highly recommended for Windows. There are many others as well.

In addition to what @DDPS said:

  • What software did you use to rip the CDs?
  • Are these fresh rips that you are creating now, or did you rip them in the past but imported them into Roon just now?

Make sure the [AlbumArtist] and the Album name is the same for all tracks

To get the best out of Roon you may need a rudimentary knowledge of Tags

Have a read in the Knowledge Base

I’m using a Mac system. If I go to my library through my steamer’s app, the files/CD is shown as one cd with intact files. But with Roon, my cd is split into two disks with some music tracks on one and the rest on the second file. I don’t understand why that is happening.

How can I merge the multiple disks under Roon back into one disk?

… understanding how and why might help avoid problems later though.

Could you post some screenshots?

A great way to get album tracks to merge is to make sure the album titles are the same.

Most tag editors allow you to set a disc number. I usually use a 1 here if it is a compilation disc. If multiple CD’s belong to the same collection then use 2, 3 etc.

Another option is setting an album artist. If it is a compilation with music from different artists then I’ll normally use various artists as album artist.

I’ve been using roon for years now, and sometimes I still get some unexpected groupings when I rip/import an album. Could be preventable but they’re often unpredictable.

Editing/merging usually fixes things.

And like andy said, screenshots would be helpful to get an idea of what this particular issue is. :+1:

Seems like the albums in question are not going to be tagged (if you haven’t done so, it’s not necessarily going to be the case) or partially tagged (mutt rips? or different artists on tracks but no album artist tag?) and could be inspected with mp3tag before importing to ensure they have a single album title and album artist.

FWIW my 4,000+ albums upon initial import were all tagged (ripped CDs/DVDs/BRs to FLAC over 20+ year period), including Album Artist if there is more than one artist on the disc, and I had no issues like this; I don’t think it’s to be expected if the tagging has been done.

As already mentioned it will probably be quite clear what’s up with a couple of screenshots.

Is there any difference you know of between those 5 tracks and the others? Same source? In same folder?

What does the folder they’re in look like?

Here are a couple screen shots. Those albums have been split into two files with tracks randomly placed in each new album. How can I recombine them into their single album. In iTunes they don’t show up as two albums.

As described in the link I already posted:

Merging will work in Roon but it won’t solve any underlying issues with the files themselves (inconsistent tagging within one album is very often different sources/a mutt rip; it can’t really happen in any way during any proper rip process). Sure, it will work inside Roon if the possible different sources are at a similar volume level etc. but I would also be looking at the files themselves personally.

If you could get mp3tag and drag that album into there and see if it’s internally consistent then that would help to see whether the files are like that or whether Roon is creating this issue.

Manually merging a large number (if it is large) of affected albums in Roon could be a long task and not really reach an ideal outcome.

BTW Your Best of the Alan Parsons Project is almost the side 1/side 2 vinyl split. Almost. Could it be from vinyl and not well tagged?

The merge process seems to be working albeit slow going. Thanks for the suggestion. Is there a faster way than going to each artist and doing each album?

All of my music files were either ripped from redbook cd’s or SACD’s. The mixed up album files are just under Roon and not in my other applications files.
