Slow CD ripping speed to Nautilus [Nucleus] One (ref#UPNRI8)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I am just starting out and have ripped three CDs to my Nautilus One. Each cd took about 20-25 minutes to rip to the internal ssd. That seems slow compared to what I have read it should take. the cd player is USB 3.0 compatible.

Tell us about your home network

· It is a Verizon FIOS router.

Hi @jwhoefling,

We’d be happy to take a closer look, but first, could you please share a step-by-step around your ripping process specifically?

How is your Nucleus connected to your network/router?

In the meantime, please keep your Nucleus / Roon Server powered on and connected to your network, and we’ll enable diagnostic mode to take a closer look.

Thank you!

I have a Cat5 wire plugged into the back of my Roon and the other end plugs into the back of the Verizon FIOS router I sent you a picture of, into the LAN 1 socket on the back of the Edison Fios footer. I didn’t use the cat 6 wire that came with the Roon because it was not long enough. Someone at your shop said a cat 5 wire was okay to use and not the problem with my initial attempts to connect the Roon to the internet. I can readily purchase a longer cat 6 wire if that is needed. My current cat 5 wire is about 10 feet long,
In terms of diagnostics from your end, do you need me to stop ripping?
Thanks for your help.

Hi, fellow user here..

CAT 5e is just fine to use. Ripping Speed is usually a function of the CD Player being used and the connection method, assuming USB.

So, one question is what CD player are you using, which is part of the main question Benjamin asked, and you haven’t answered, which was..

Another thing is CD condition, of course, especially with Roon OS:

Ripping performance and accuracy

Roon OS uses CD Paranoia to do the actual extraction. It runs with all the “paranoia” turned on. This means that your CD is very likely to rip accurately but at the expense of time. It can take hours to rip a badly scratched CD. It may end up failing anyway, but CD Paranoia will try extensively to accurately extract the audio off the CD.

The cd player is an Amicool model A11-SU3
Interface type: USB-A & USB-C
Support USB: 3.0/ 2.0/ 1.0
Input DC 5V 1 A.

I pulled my Amicool CD drive out of the USB port at the back of the roon and plugged in an ancient Apple SuperDrive. Just ripped one CD in 6 minutes and one in 8. Assuming the Amicool drive is not very fast? I will keep ripping with the SuperDrive to see if these faster times persist. Thanks for the suggestions and help to all.

I would suggest ripping on a computer and then copying the ripped files to the RoonServer. The way Roon rips CDs does not name the files, or the folder; nor add any meta data TO the files. If you need to get the files out of Roon to use with something else, you need to export them out. And, Roon doesn’t handle ripping box sets well.

It has nominally normal speed, according to Amazon it can read at 24 x CD speed, which is standard. It’s possible (but not typical) that it might not reach its full speed when using Roon OS (which is based on the Linux operating system kernel). Or ist just happened to have trouble reading a particular CD, this can also happen (but then the issue should be limited to a specific CD or a small number)
