Slow Roon performance and complete music stopped (ref#6RR3CR)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Roon is slow, freezing or won’t start

Roon is slow, freezing or won’t start

· Roon is stuck updating or installing

Tell us what's going on

· Very slow response and music stops completely

Tell us about your home network

· Where internet acces the house there is a Ziggo Modem/Router(The Netherlands). From here an Orbi Mesh netwerk with RBR20 Master with 2 Satellites RBS20. From the Master RBR 20 to a Buffalo ■■-GS2016 switch. From this switch to my living where the Melco S100 switch goes to a Nucleus Plus with 4 TB internal storage. From the Melco S100 to a Wadax Studio Player.
In the same netwerk there is a Synology NAS for storend files. Also using TIDAL and Qobuz.

When music stops sometimes it looks like, without any reason, the complete libary is scanned. Till this is finished it’s not possible to play any tracks. More and more as a bypass I play now by TIDAL or Qobuz Connect by the Wadax Studio Player direct as Roon is not working at all.

Many of my music friend playing with Roon, encounter the same problems, independent the streamer they use. From a simple Nuc up to very expensive streamers :man_shrugging:

Nucleus Plus is upgraded to following specs. for ram and memory:

1 x Kingston Fury Impact 2 x 16 GB SODIMM DDR4 2666 CL15

1 x Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 250GB

Hello @Jeff_S

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Hello Vadim,

Thanks for your reply. Let me see to get the more or less same situation.

More easy is to look at the pictures I took where the exact time and date are shown. Be aware of the time zone in The Netherlands and you have the correct information when this happened.

Hello Vadim,

Not exactly the same issue but at the next picture the music stopped playing. Today at 7.24AM lost connection to audio zone but found it again. I had to push the play button again and the music continued where it stopped.

Hello Vadim,

Here some pictures where Roon lost the control and stopped. You can see the time and dates.

Hi Vadim,

Just right now the exact same thing happened as I mentioned at my First message.

Listening to a track, the music stopped and see the screenshots I took and check the time and date at the left upper corner of each picture. Date 21st May 2026 started at 23.24 hr.

Hello @Jeff_S,

Thanks for the details and logs. They clearly show the cause of the freezes and continuous library scans:

  1. Network Micro-Drops: Your Nucleus+ is constantly losing connection to the audio endpoints (and even its internal processes) due to dropped multicast traffic.
  2. Scanning Loop: Because of these brief network disconnects, Roon temporarily loses sight of your Synology NAS. When it reconnects, it triggers a massive background re-scan that overloads the Nucleus and freezes the system.
  3. Complex Chain: Cascading multiple switches (Buffalo + Melco) behind a Mesh system is likely dropping the sensitive audio packets.
Let's run a simplified isolation test:
  1. Bypass the switches: Temporarily connect both the Nucleus+ and Wadax Studio Player directly to your main Orbi router using standard ethernet cables.
  2. Disable the NAS: In Roon (Settings -> Storage), temporarily disable the Synology NAS folder. Let's rely only on the internal 4TB storage and Tidal/Qobuz for this test.
  3. Test Playback: Play music and observe if the system is stable.
If Roon works flawlessly in this minimal setup, we will know the issue is within the switch cascade or NAS routing. Let us know how the test goes!

Hello @ Alex_h

Thanks for your reply and clear directions.

Without any reason and no change, the system is working flawless since Saturday. No one single stop :man_shrugging: BUT this happened before and my Audio dealer was here and they encounter the same problem at their store and at many of their customers. All with a different setup or equipment. Because he told me so I brought this issue up within the community as now I know I am not the only one.

without any changes, for now Roon is working well. I hoped with the time and date the issues start, you Guys were able to have a closer look at the problem. Even when the there is a connection and the CPU is not overloaded, it takes a long time to start or find a track or album.

I hope my reply makes sense before I (again) bypass all switches and my NAS. Looking forward for your reply.

BR. Jeff

Hi @Jeff_S,

We recently released improvements to memory usage in our latest update, so please let us know whether that has helped. Even when the connection is stable and the CPU is not overloaded, slow browsing and delayed track or album access are still important details, and we want to see whether this update changes that behavior for you. Looking forward to hearing what you see on your end.

Hi @noris

I have to say, the music continues to play without any stops.

Still Some issues:

A new one is when I take my iPad or IPhone for the First time of the day, quite often my Nucleus Plus can’t be found and I got the question or I want to Connect to another Core :man_shrugging: Suddenly The Core shows up.

After searching for an Artist it takes a long time before the suggestions shows up. When clicking on an Artist it takes extremely long to see al albums etc etc.

Indeed Some progress but still not flawless…

Hi @Jeff_S,

Thanks for the update and additional information. One thing really stands out in your logs: with 470,000+ tracks, you’re running one of the largest Roon libraries out there, well beyond what our own team is able to thoroughly test with.

The good news is the system is healthy right now after a recent restart. This aligns with the additional work our development team is wrapping up, and should definitely help your case.

If you reboot Roon Server, do things stay snappy for a bit, and generally become slower the longer Roon Server runs?

Thanks for your ongoing patience in the meantime. :+1:

@benjamin

Thanks for your support and reply.

Sorry for running such a large library :face_with_peeking_eye: Right now the Nucleus Plus runs for 3 days and 21 hours, at this actual moment running well.

But during these almost 4 days the performance is not predictable. Now running well but since last reboot, periods of slow finding/starting of stopping the music happend.

In 2022 I have add additional ram memory by Kingston FURY Impact 2x 16GB SODIMM DDR4 2666 CL 15 and a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 250GB. To be honest, just in the hope the Nucleus Plus would be faster.

Seems people with much smaller libraries are having more or less the same problems and I hope Roon is able to fix this for myself and many others as the idea of Roon is fantastic

@benjamin Hello Benjamin,

Things have been changed, Roon was working fine but now a couple of times suddenly stopped playing music. Radio or Album track, same result.

Without any reason the the system runs an index, see below and look at the different moments it’s happening. What could be the reason for this behavior? How to avoid this?
