Slow Roon startup and long breaks between tracks (ref#V5UFRV)

What app are you having the slowness issue with?

· Roon

What kind of performance/speed issue are you experiencing?

· The app takes a long time to respond to commands

Please try to reboot your Roon Server

· No, the issue is still the same even immediately after a reboot

Please try to reboot your networking gear (Router/Switches/etc.)

· No, the issue is still the same even after a reboot

Is there any change in behavior if you try to navigate to Roon Settings -> Library and set both Background and On-Demand Audio Analysis to Throttled or Off?

· No, the issue is still the same

Does the issue happen on multiple Roon Remotes (controllers) or just one?

· Issue happens on multiple remotes

Router Domain Name System (DNS) change

· I don't know how to do this

What is the operating system of your Roon Server host machine?

· Nucleus

Which model Nucleus do you have?

Timestamp of issue occurrences

· Notices this several times each day. Last time was around 9:03pm nepal time, apr 21. Following this there was a number of succesfull attemps on opening Roon.

Describe the issue

Long Roon startup (10-30 sec); long breaks between tracks etc

Describe your network setup

ISP is Worldlink in Nepal. Router is TP link GXE75. TP link switch is connected to the router. Nucleus+ revA; My NaimQb; and two blusound speakers are connected with ethernet to the switch.

Hi @Jesper_Skovlund,
Thanks for reaching out to our support.

We’ve reviewed the diagnostics report of your Nucleus+ report.

Your SSD looks healthy, with no bad sectors or other problems, so we can rule out drive failure as the cause of the slowdown.

We’re seeing two other main bottlenecks:

  1. DNS and connectivity issues: there are repeated “Network unreachable” and DNS timeout errors. That lines up with the 10 to 30 second delay at startup and between tracks, since Roon is struggling to reach metadata and streaming services through your current ISP configuration.
  2. Database overhead: There are also high pauses for maintenance, reaching up to 30% of runtime. That suggests the database is carrying extra overhead, likely from accumulated metadata junk or sync errors.
Recommended steps
  1. Change DNS on your router first. Since Worldlink may be using restrictive DNS, please switch to Google or Cloudflare DNS on your TP Link router. Please log into the router admin panel and set the Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the Secondary DNS to 1.1.1.1, then save and reboot the router.
  2. If your TP-Link switch is a managed one, please make sure IGMP Snooping is disabled. That feature often interferes with Roon’s communication.
  3. Please go to Settings > Library > Library Maintenance and click Clean up library.
  4. Please check that the Ethernet cable between the Nucleus and the switch is at least Cat5e or Cat6.
Please let us know whether responsiveness improves after the DNS change and the library cleanup.

Thanks.

Thanks a lot @alex_h for this helpful and thorough response.

Happy to hear my SSD looks healthy, and thanks so much for taking a look at the Nucleus+ report.

I did do a dns reset to 1.1.1.1. and 8.8.8.8 - and after reboot it has improved.
However, there are occasionally still 10-15 second breaks between tracks. Not as frequent as before, and breaks are not as long as before. But they are there.

The TP-link switch is TL SG-1008d, and is unmanaged.

I did do library cleanup around a weeks time ago as one of many actions to do something about the issues myself.

The ethernet cable: I am not sure if cat5 or cat6, so I will go hunting for that here in Kathmandu.

thanks,
Jesper

Hey @Jesper_Skovlund,

Thanks for the update! Sorry to hear you’re still suffering from delays between transitioning tracks. We’d be happy to take another look at a fresh diagnostic report from your Roon Server if you could please share:

  1. The specific date and time the next time you experience a slow transition, or
  2. The specific name of the track that has fully played, along with the next track in the queue that is slow to load

We’ll be monitoring for your reply, thanks Jesper! :folded_hands:
