Description of Issue

We use both Tidal and add new CD’s to the library regularly. Sometimes new CD’s that have been added do not appear in Roon (recently Gary Barlow - Music Played by Humans) but often CD’s do appear in Roon?
I have tried forcing a rescan under settings/storage to no avail. I have also checked settings/library/skipped files and they dont appear there.
Usually the albums in question are on Tidal and can be added to the library from Tidal but my wife prefers ‘her’ library version.
Can anyone assist?

Jeremy are these albums already in your Tidal library?

Sometimes you can find the Tidal version in your library and set the CD version to primary through the versions button on the album page.
I have seen this when I have had high resolution albums in my library and also have had MP3 versions that I forgot to delete before adding the CD rip

Thank you. Yes the Tidal versions are in my library, however i have checked the 2 albums i know about and none is shown as a local file in my library only as various versions on Tidal.
I wonder if Roon has failed to identify the album (its a deluxe edition) and has put it somewhere i cant be expected to look? However neither album is anything other than a popular mainstream CD and not anything specialist or obscure.

Jeremy Roon is pretty good at finding anything well known that has been imported.

Did you manage to find the versions button just to see what is there?

Also have you looked in Settings->Library->Skipped files to see what is there?

Also how are you ripping the CDs and getting them into the watch folder

This may seem obvious, but make sure to check the file suffix to make sure it says FLAC or something else legal.

I once spent 20 minutes debugging the non-import of an album before I happened to notice all the files were APEs.

I have been checking the versions button and only seeing the Tidal versions (this is not the case with most other CD imports where both Tidal and Library versions are shown)
I have looked at skipped files and the last entries (not many) are over a year ago.
The music server has a CD slot for importing CD’s, i have accessed the web page for the CD ripper and it displays the CD has been imported.

Jeremy does it tell you where it is and where it is stored on Roon and how it has been named.
Seems to me that it has not been doing it properly or it has been failing (but said without knowledge to be honest).

I and many others on this forums strongly recommend dbPoweramp (for Mac and PC) for ripping CD’s and collecting metadata. It is a very good tool and excellent value for money. If you are reluctant there are other software on the market including free ones.

Do some searching of the forums for other people having issues and you will read the same comments over and over again. It’s worth taking control of the process and set up a sync between your pc/mac and Roon.

It’s well worth the effort to take control of the ripping process and as someone who still buys about 10 CD’s a month dbPoweramp means popping the CD in the drive, almost everything is then perfect for my setup and then I sync the files to Roon and they are there in under a minute and never a skipped album

The CD ripper in the server is there to enable my wife to add new CD’s without involving the main computer. My computer (iMac) does not have a CD drive anyway.
I dont really understand why redbook CD’s should be so hard to import though, certainly most of them work fine so why are some troublesome?

Hi @jeremy_davies

First, I’d like to point out some documentation we have that may be helpful here. In our KB we have an article about Skipped Files and an article about why some files might be missing from Roon .

If you go to Settings > Library > Skipped Files do you see any of your missing files there?

I’d like to recommend looking at a couple of specific examples of tracks that did not get imported into Roon. Are they supported files? Are they showing up in Skipped Files? If it looks like they should be importing, let me know! Screenshots of these files in their storage location would be helpful for discovering what may be happening.

Hi Jeremy now that Roon support have picked this up, I will let them help you.
Good luck with getting this working

Thanks for all your help, hopefully it will be sorted out.

I have looked at the storage location for roon and find several (37) ‘Unidentified Albums’ with file names such as 4c097207. The content is playable so i might be able to work out what they are!
Is it possible to access these files from inside roon and edit them?

Hi @jeremy_davies

You can edit the albums in Roon, but it doesn’t modify the files themselves. However, if you were to find these albums and edit the file tags outside of Roon, it will also update in Roon to reflect this.

It’s possible that some of these albums don’t have tags and Roon isn’t able to identify them due to a lack of information.

I will try and identify the mystery albums and edit them outside of roon and see what happens. Is there a protocol for file naming etc? Artist, title etc and will putting some info in allow roon to discover the rest?

We have some information about this in our Help Center:

In some cases it might. While most tend to be able to be identified, sometimes we just don’t have data on an album to be able to identify it.

I have managed to do one album (the Gary Barlow one) but this entailed a network share between my mac and the roon server (with internal storage) in this case i renamed the album with the album title and placed it in the gary barlow folder under the flac section of the music folder. I first had to expose the database to editing. Is there a simpler way to locate the unidentified CD imports in roon itself and edit directly?

You can find unidentified albums by going to the Albums Browser, choosing Focus > Inspector > Identified, and clicking to inverse the selection. Like this:

findUnidentified

Hi Dylan,

There are quite a lot unidentified! is there a suggested workflow to identify/alter the tags/artwork etc?

Thank you,

Hi @jeremy_davies, we don’t have any specifically suggested method for this. It might be good to ask for advice from other Roon users in the #roon category.

I’m not sure how your files are tagged or stored currently — Depending on this, you might be able to use a 3rd party software that updates your tags automatically if it’s able to identify them in a different way.

My roon core runs on a server with an SSD inside and cd loader on the front which is used to add new content.
I had assumed roon did the tags automatically, i presume sometimes it has difficulty hence 3rd party help might be required?
