Some internet radio plays, some don't

Hi

I am getting “Transport - Failed to load media” error on some but not all internet radio stations I try to add

All are added manually by copy and pasting the URL from TuneIn

For example Heart FM works
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s2846&formats=mp3,aac

Absolute Radio 70s doesn’t
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s150148&formats=mp3,aac

Any ideas?

Hi @gasman – Thanks for sharing this issue with us. Please provide a brief description of your current setup using this link as a guide.

Make sure to describe your network configuration/topology, including any networking hardware currently in use, so we can have a clear understanding of how your devices are communicating.

Also, can you verify that you are able to play that station directly from the website?

Hi Dylan

Thanks for the help

Roon server - dedicated headless linux server (administered via Webmin), debian 8 with Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 kernel, i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, 4 cores

Roon endpoint - custom built fanless PC, i3-7100T CPU @ 3.40GHz, 8GB RAM

Internet >70MB down, ~20MB up, wired gigabit network (no WiFi)

All radio stations added by copy & paste URL from tunein to Roon dialog

Latest version of Core and Bridge (from About)

Examples I gave (Absolute and Heart) are both playable from website directly but only Heart from Roon

Many thanks

Neill

I have similar problem. I just start to test how the internet stations are working.
I’m not able to add streams even from recommended station lists. On top TuneIn streams even I can add them, do not work for many stations (Like Swiss Classic, Jazz, Otto’s Baroque etc. Happy Days Newage stream works same time eg.).
It is the same on my Macbook Pro (15" early 2011 - 8 GB RAM) and desktop Mac Mini both running High Sierra OS 10.13.4.
Roon 1.4 (310)
The webs streams are working when I listen to them directly from the a browser (Safari).
Thanks for recommendations!

Hi @gasman and @Ferenc_Szucs ----- Thank you for the additional details on the behavior you’re observing. It is very much appreciated!

I just wanted to follow up regarding your observations. These radio stations appear to have a a region lock (I cannot access them myself on TuneIn) and I believe the behavior may be related to this. I’ve submitted a ticket with our tech team regarding this behavior so I can get some clarification. I will get back to you with more details as soon as possible.

Thanks a lot! Will wait for solution. I’m on Serbian IP, but the Tune In stations work well from browser, so some additional restriction may occur, during Roon playback. Similar problem could be the adding radio stations, where from the streaming websites, the working streams are not to add to Roon.
Looking forward to learn about the solution.

Hi again, I just wanted to reach out and let you both know that we have investigated the issue here a bit further and wanted to update you.

@Ferenc_Szucs — HappyDay Newage worked just fine for me using this link: https://tunein.com/radio/Happyday-Newage-Radio-EZ-s264421/

Otto’s Baroque, on the other hand, did not work for me initially in TuneIn or Roon. Using a VPN tunneled to UK, I was able to get Otto’s Baroque to play in both TuneIn and Roon, so it seemed like everything was resolved once it detected I was in the correct region. Here’s the link I used:
https://tunein.com/radio/1FM—Ottos-Baroque-Music-Radio-s47730/

@gasman — Absolute Radio 70s was a similar experience in that I couldn’t play in TuneIn due to my region. Using the VPN I was able to get it to play in TuneIn, but still not in Roon. It appears that the stream is not something that would work in Roon regardless of region. I looked on the Absolute Radio website and found some links there. I was able to successfully get the station to play using this link:
http://network.absoluteradio.co.uk/core/audio/oggflac/live.pls?service=a7

Hope this helps!

Regards,
Dylan

It does help @dylan, thank you very much :grinning:

Would be interesting from a technical perspective to understand why this is an issue

I know it’s not a direct or fair comparison, but I have been fine using these streams in MPD based environments, which suggest to my untutored mind that it’s something to do with how Roon processes the streams when compared with MPD/GStreamer

Hi Dylan - I’m now in Budapest in our HO and tried to add radio stations.
Same issue - I could not add direct streams, only Tune In streams and they do not play again in Roon.
The stream on their own, they play in direct streams and Tune In streams as well.
Now I’m in Hungary and as EU it should work normally. The situation from EU IP is the same as from Serbia.
Just to repeat from the web browser all station are playing, just Roon can not get through.

Thanks a lot for further ideas!

Hi @Peter_Danko — Thanks for sharing more details with us, I appreciate it!

Some streams to TuneIn have region limitations, and some are designed so that they cannot be used outside of TuneIn. Roon will try to use the URL provided by TuneIn, but those limitations placed by the station on that stream could cause Roon to not be able to play them.

If you’re still having trouble using TuneIn, the best option is to look to the station directly for a good stream URL. Often they will have them on their website, or you can try contacting them to see if they have one available to you.

Hope this helps!
Dylan

The link for Otto’s Baroque Music didn’t work for me. I found this, which does work: http://sc-baroque.1.fm:7066/ .
