The presenting problem is the occasional dropping of my server from the network. And I want this to stop. But, I don’t have the technical expertise to troubleshoot this, so I need some outside help.
My setup is briefly this: a ROCK (7i7BNH) with a 5TB hard drive attached by USB; wired connections; and Mac remotes. Endpoints are a ROCK/bridge et al.
Droppage tends to happen when I’m NOT using Roon. I haven’t yet found any coincident actions to explain this. The frequency is about once a week.
I could just change out everything, and given the router’s and drive’s age (5+ years) this may be the best solution. But, I would prefer to understand what’s going on, document it to my satisfaction, and fix as necessary. I have ordered a larger drive out of necessity (getting full).
So, ask your questions and help a fellow Roon user get back to listening. Thanks!
PS: Library size is 7K albums, 132K tracks. Primary remote running Sequoia 15.2. Server running latest early access.
Thank you for your post. RoonServer diagnostics don’t indicate any managed crashes or any obvious performance problems - however, we can see cyclical restarts in logs that tend to correspond to crashes or hardware shutdowns.
RoonServer itself does not lose network access prior to the shutdown - I’d first perform due diligence on the NUC for thermal maintenance per the steps linked above.
If you have a precise timestamp of a crash, please share it here and the team will investigate. Thank you!
UPDATE: I plan to clean and/or replace the NUC fan, maybe reseat the heat sink with new “glue”, and replace the external drive. I will also make an effort to record the time when a dropout occurs. Thanks to everyone for the expertise and suggestions.
