Describe the issue

SONOS ERA 100 Airplay does not work

Describe your network setup

Wired and wireless

Out of interest is there a reason you choose to Airplay to the Era100? Sonos Streaming would offer better quality.

Hi - purely for room grouping - yes I can use Sonos - but I’d still like to know why Roon sees airplay but it fails to work…. Roon is a paid service!

@Sean_Byford,

Logs indicate Roon Server discovers the Sonos on port 7000, but the connection times out when attempting to establish the session at 192.168.1.74:33215.

Please run the following checks from the machine running Roon Server to test for network blocking:

1. Basic Reachability ping -c 4 192.168.1.74

2. Test AirPlay Port (7000) nc -vz 192.168.1.74 7000 (or telnet 192.168.1.74 7000)

3. Test Session Port (33215) nc -vz 192.168.1.74 33215 (or telnet 192.168.1.74 33215)

If port 7000 connects but 33215 fails, this suggests a firewall, VLAN, or client isolation rule is blocking the traffic.

Let us know the output and confirm if both devices are on the same subnet.

There is an open ticket for the Era 100

I ran the requested port tests using bash /dev/tcp on the Unraid host.

Sonos Era 100 (192.168.1.74):
– TCP 7000: reachable
– TCP 33215: times out (exit code 124, no connection refused)

Sonos Play:5 (192.168.1.120):
– TCP 33215: immediate connection refused

This shows different TCP behaviour between Era 100 and Play:5 on the same network.

For clarity i am running roon on an unraid server - could that have anything to do with it…noting however that other sonos devices are playing fine via airplay from the docker unraid server

Hi @Sean_Byford,

The Era has a known issue with Roon’s Airplay2/1 back compatibility - there is a ticket in the pipeline. The primary symptom is “silent playback,” where the playbar indicates the endpoint is streaming but there’s no sound. In other words, Airplay pairs, but then can’t decode the stream. Can you confirm if that’s the symptom you’re seeing?

You mentioned a mixed WiFi/ethernet environment - is at least one Sonos devices hardwired? This will activate SonosNET and introduce a separate “band” for device discovery between SonosNET-capable endpoints.

Try the following:

  1. Disconnect all your Sonos devices from ethernet, using only WiFi, and initiate a device discovery cycle by refreshing Roon Settings → Audio

  2. Note which devices are discovered. Next, plug at least one Sonos device in via ethernet (ideally all of them), and repeat the device discovery cycle.

What is the specific network topology serving these two Sonos endpoints? Do you have a mesh network, and if so, is the RoonServer machine hardwired?

We’ll watch for your reply. Thank you!

Just posting so this thread stays active. I’ve been waiting over a year for a fix despite open tickets. I can’t do multi-room audio without AirPlay functionality.

Hi, the era 100 appears to play but there is no audio and the playback progress bar stays at 0. Ref Sonos, yes I have a wired device and all Sonos devices work perfectly - in and outside of Roon. This issue solely relates to era 100 - whether it’s wired or wireless

Just to note: SonosNet is irrelevant for Era100. It’s a WiFi-only device.

That’s incorrect. You can disable WiFi by getting an Ethernet to usb c adapter - then it becomes wired

True, but it’s still not participating in SonosNet. Anyway I was referring to wireless connectivity.

Thanks for confirming @Sean_Byford - as @connor mentioned we do have a ticket in the pipeline already for this issue.

Progress has unfortunately been much slower than we hoped, so we very much appreciate your ongoing patience here. :raising_hands:
