I was playing around with the end device “settings” (crossfade time & volume leveling). I think if the crossfade slider went “below zero” it would be the same as adding space between tracks? I was hoping it would work that way, but clearly it didn’t. That would be my recommendation with the UI appropriately labeled.
I’m also reminded of a time a few years ago when I had stuttering playback from my Transporter and I had to go into windows and assign the LMS.exe program a higher priority on its headless server (low powered Windows at that time). Whenever Windows was doing updates, cleanup and garbage collection it was de-emphasizing the media server software to the detriment of the timestream. Not saying that it is a problem with more modern hardware today, but it reminded me that there are other priorities for non-dedicated computers running a server application that might impinge on performance.
The middle option makes the most sense (so long as the small configurable gap can be set to 0) as it gives the user the option. Coming from the LMS world I’ve not found Roon’s behaviour any different re gapless playback. Tracks on albums have a natural beginning and and are seamless when they should be e.g. Dark Side of the Moon. I’ve never experienced what @Sloop_John_B describes and I’ve been using radio extensively.
The only time I’ve experienced abrupt ends to tracks is when they’re intended to flow into the next track on the album but it’s been played via Radio and the only time I’ve experienced abrupt starts is when switching resolution and the DAC needs time to switch mode - that’s easily catered for by setting an appropriate delay for the playback device in Roon
Indeed option 2 would be good, the issues I was having we’re predominantly with tracks designed to run straight into the next album tracks or live recordings. Live recordings particularly have abrupt transitions.
Got my SB Touch up and running with Roon in less than a half hour and enjoyed a full evening immensely. And then, the following day, everything fell apart. Can’t listen to more then one or one and a half seconds of a song without it dropping out. Nothing in my house has changed. Same router set up, same MacBook Pro, same everything. What happened? I was so excited to have a new use for my SB Touch so am doubly disappointed that all appears to have gone south. Similar problems forced me to mothball my SBTouch; could it potentially be a router issue? I have an Apple Airport Express. Eagerly awaiting a solution!
Late 2013 MacBook Pro, 15", OSX El Cap, 10.11.2, 2GhZ Intel Core i7, running Roon 1.1 (build 94). I’m using Tidal exclusively. An Apple Airport Express serves a home of less than 2100 sq ft. A WiFi repeater is in the basement below me to boost the signal for an XBox One.
I’m suspicious of our wifi as my experience w the Squeezebox pre-Roon was frustratingly similar to my experience w SBT/Roon, in that it would work very well for periods of time but then appeared to tumble into not working, almost as cumulative process, ie, a small glitch, then another, then a longer dropout, then another, eventually not working at all.
I’ve ordered a better router in hopes that it at least helps with the problem and may try to use my Express as an extender, though I read that there are potential problems with that scenario. Thanks!
Brand new Airport Extreme hooked up and the problem has disappeared. I have no idea why my Express worked for the first day then punked out…? Too many gadgets in the house? Who knows. In any case, I am psyched. Really a fantastic thing to be able to use the SBT again. Thanks, Roon.
