Steps for backup restore when transfering files to new hard drive

Hi @Peter_Neski,

Roon should only be watching once “copy” of your music files, if you have the duplicates set up as you have them now, it can get a bit tricky. Let me explain what is happening behind the scenes, maybe this will help:

  1. When you import a track into Roon, Roon adds it to the local Roon database based on it’s audio content.

  2. If you move this file to another location and the previous location of the file doesn’t exist anymore, no problem, Roon can match it up with the existing entry.

  3. If you have both the track in the old location and in the new location, Roon will only match up the first file it saw to the database entry, and import the duplicate as a “new” file, with no metadata associated with it.

So in this case, I would actually suggest that you sort out your Drive B/C location so that Roon only sees one copy of your music files.

All these files that you’re not using on drive B/C that don’t have any metadata associated with them, move them to a different folder, titled “music duplicates” or something similar and do not set Roon to scan that directory. Hopefully this explanation helps.
