Storage location for uploaded album art

I’ve been searching for a hour with no luck for the answer to what I thought was a simple question.

If I’m adding better album artwork by selecting an album, going to Edit Album, and going to Add Image, as shown below:

Where is that artwork then stored? I’d like to be able to grab an image that I’ve previously uploaded in this way, and can’t for the life of me find it.

Thanks.

Most likely in some incomprehensible database file among the millions of files that make up the Roon database

I wonder if you heard my rueful laughter when I read this reply…

If you would like to use your own image, place it in the current album folder and name it folder.jpg

Then you will have that option on the screenshot you provided.

Hope this helps

Also, click the cover twice to make it fullscreen in Roon, then you can still screenshot it in good quality and save the screenshot.

Thanks Mike, but that’s not what I’m trying to find out. I know how to add an image – you click that button that says “Add Image” and you’re able to do so. I’m trying to find out where it’s then stored.

Yeah, thought of that too, but geez, what a kudge.

Images are stored in 2 different places. One is the Roon database which Just a fellow user referred to and the other is the root folder of the album. The root folder image will be the only one you can edit or replace.

It is actually not stored in the root folder of the album when uploaded in the way I’ve described.

If the image is not in the album folder, then Roon will use the one in its database or none will be shown. Roon album art is album oriented and is not made for singles from different albums in a single folder.

If you upload an image using that button, Mike, it’s correctly displayed for the album. But, again, it’s not stored in the album folder, which I’ve confirmed both in Roon and in the Mac Finder.

The roon library is LevelDB based. Your jpg’s are stored there but it doesn’t help you much as there are no tools or means of indexing or searching. I have millions of jpg’s. This will vary depending on library size. I maintain a “Scans” folder for all uploaded art, including Qobuz replacements so I have a means of editing uploaded Qobuz jpg’s that do not fit into my local library folder structure. Over many years that directory has grown to many hundreds of jpg’s. Access is very clunky via roon but it is better than nothing.

They are stored in their original format, using a new filename, in the Roon database under ROON_DATAROOT/RoonServer/Database/Core/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/images_1. They’re likely to be in the cache folder, too.

The x’s should be replaced with your server’s 32-bit hex number. Path may vary according to OS. See this:
