I have currently used it abroad via Tailscale enabled for all Apple devices and have not have had any issues so far. Fair to point out though, that beta may imply risks and reduced support.
Also there was an ongoing situation that Tidal tracks were marked as ‘not available’ where I cannot pin when exactly this happened and attribute for sure to the ARC app for MacOS since they were also so for ARC for iOS (no issue with the availability in the native Tidal App).
yes, I tried (with Tailscale) and it did not work. Roon (itself) is not meant to work, there are some discussion here, where people managed to somehow make it work with VPNs, if I remember correctly.
Behaviour for me - as long as Tailscale was activated and Roon ‘itself’ still active on Mac, I could navigate and use Roon on Mac remotely for search and change players, but only those on my home network and not on my Mac. After quitting Roon or turning off/on Tailscale on Mac, the connection was lost and could not be reactivated (–> spinning wheel). Roon for me does only work if I am on the same Wifi network node as the Roon server.
I am not a network specialist, or really know how Roon app is designed to communicate with the Roon Server, so no idea what could help.
Be aware that it was never announced in Early Access. As far as anyone knows, it’s possible that it’s not officially in Beta for a later release but they just happened to not prevent installation on macOS.
In addition, one shouldn’t mix Early Access and Production versions. It may sometimes work but it will cause problems sooner or later. Therefore, installing the Early Access ARC on macOS implies moving the server and the other apps to Early Access, too.
thanks, I did not change the Roon server, it is on the latest productive release and I do not intend to change that for the moment since that was not a prerequisite.
(anyhow, shouldn’t be required or otherwise I am confused by your statement 'that it was not released in ‘Early Access’…?).
as far as release strategy and processes go, I am acquainted with it by profession, but not familiar with the specifics of the Roon solution(s).
And this will lead to problems sooner or later if the remote/ARC is not at the same version as the server. We see it all the time on the forum. It can work for a while until there is an incompatible change.
E.g., from official support staff:
I said:
(I.e., I didn’t say „released“).
What I mean is that there was never an announcement in the Early Access release notes stating something along the lines of, „we are making ARC available for macOS in Early Access testing in preparation for an official release on the macOS platform in a future Production update“.
(„Early Access“ is roughly their name for Beta).
Therefore, it is possible that they just forgot to prevent the installation of the Early Access version on macOS though TestFlight in the same way as they do for the Production version through the App Store. And hence, they might change this at any time, or it may be completely untested.
I’ve had success using Unifi’s Teleport VPN via WiFiman Desktop on MacOS. It takes a while for my Macbook zone to appear, but it does eventually and playback works.
The approach using Tailscale that I mentioned in an earlier post still works, but is a bit more complicated compared to using Teleport. While Tailscale requires a bit more technical knowledge to set up, it works on various devices regardless of your router vendor (Teleport is Unifi-only).
I tried Teleport but favor the vpn WireGuard client option with UniFi. Also works well with iPhone with the vpn config set to connect on demand with cellular.
Allows Roon client to work away from home and also allows ARC to work without port forwarding.
Added perk is it allows my iPhone when connected to the vpn to utilize pihole dns.
