Support for Wavpack (.wv) decoding (of compressed DSF)

I’m not using WavPack nor am I likely to use WavPack in the future, but looking at their webpage it does seem that there should not be any reason why Roon couldn’t include support for it. It’s open source, multi platform and avoiding patented stuff.

Then again, if only a few people are interested in it, it might not be worth the effort unless everything worth doing is already done  I actually have no idea how big of an effort it would be, but I assume it’s not a big thing.

Interesting article. I don’t think it is widely understood that SACD was routinely (losslessly) compressed. But I don’t see DST compression as a practical option. Foobar for example will playback a DST compressed ISO but roon will not playback an ISO, compressed or otherwise. What roon will playback is DFF or DSF.

Must admit I am surprised by the sudden interest in this thread. I was actually the OP almost exactly a year a go. The first response was 8 months later so I assumed there was no interest at all, and just use other players on the road.

Support for Meta data tags and embedded artwork.

This is something I would very much like to be supported in a future update.

To be able to handle the taging part (mp3tag) for lossless dsd, the same way as all my other formats in my collection(flac, mp3)

Please incorporate this, especially if its licens free!!! pretty please!

Hi Roon Dev,

I think is time to add Wavpack support in Roon. More and more music is published in this format and is very good format for 32bit music.

Assuming it is natively supported by taglib I can’t imagine there’s much effort involved in adding support.

I do not think this is very complex to implement.
Leading software should support multiple formats.

Yes, Wavepack dsd decoding would be a solution I’d probably use.
You have to consider a DSF collection at scale…
In my scenario that would be an estimated 8TB gain

Just to bump this. I’d like to compress and tag my DFF much like I do my PCM content. Doing so at present means those albums won’t be visible in Roon.

the trend is here!

bump from me as well.. this would be such a great feature to implement.

How do you figure? I searched google for wavpack dsd and limited results to last month only. No one talking about it, and the same support from foobar2000 as always.

I am talking about more people in the forum wanting this feature than it was a year ago or two, if it’s cheap to implement I think it should be done. I would like to play all my music through Roon, but Wavpack aside, I have seen requests for Roon to support compressed dsd in general.

Which forum? I was hoping Google would show me ANYONE talking about it in the last month – it didn’t

I’m ready to be shown otherwise. Show me the “trend”. I’m looking for:

  • usage by content providers
  • multiple products with real adoption supporting this feature
  • a vibrant and engaged community asking about this in forums on this site and other sites
  • users talking about issues with existing implementations or use cases

There are a few more people here requesting compressed dsd and wavpack (below):

Perhaps the demand isn’t huge but I think a premium product like Roon should cover all audiophile formats. If Jriver can do it, so should Roon.

If it takes some time it’s fine but I think it should be implemented since I don’t believe it’s a huge effort/cost to implement? I am tired of having multiple systems.

another bump! I never was into wavpack as flac rules for pcm.
But for dsf, wavpack saves about 50% of storage.

I would love to see this feature added as well. I converted all of my SACD extracted tracks to .wv for the reduced size and superior tagging. DSD compressed to .wv is supported on foobar and moode, so I assumed roon would support it as well. I kept my ISO files so of course I could re-extract everything to DSF, but .wv is a great container for DSD.

I would enjoy wavpack support in Roon too. But @Analogue_Ghost there is no need to re-extract DSF from your ISOs, you can just use the wavpack tool to extract them from the wv file - exactly the same, and that’s the point!

Cheers,
Robert

Yes, you are 100% correct! The wavpack tool absolutely would be the better way to go if/when I decide to make the switch back.
