Switching NAS for Roon Server between UK and US (ref#WOGV9U)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I live in both the UK and the US. My Roon server is on my MAC, which goes everywhere with me. I have a NAS raid in both places. How do I tell my Roon server to look at the NAS in the country that I'm in without changing everything and repopulating.

Tell us about your home network

· we have different routers for either country

Hello @Christopher_Boardman,

Thanks for reaching out to us with such an interesting question.

Since you will never have both NAS drives connected simultaneously, we recommend the following workaround to streamline your workflow:

1. Configure Roon Storage In Settings > Storage, add the local folder path /Volumes as a Watched Folder. (Note: /Volumes is the default directory where macOS mounts all external and network drives).

2. Automate the Connection Configure your Mac to automatically connect to the NAS drives upon login. You can follow the steps in this video guide:

Thanks.

Hi @Christopher_Boardman,

We wanted to elaborate slightly.

An alternative approach is to use manual Roon backups to maintain a dedicated Roon Server snapshot for each location, and then restore the appropriate backup whenever you move between continents.

In practice, this means keeping separate backups for each location, ideally stored on a portable USB drive, for example:

  • 2026-02-20_UK_Backup
  • 2026-01-14_US_Backup
When you arrive at a location:
  1. Connect your Mac to the local NAS at that location.
  2. Launch Roon Server.
  3. From the Roon login screen, choose Restore a Backup.
  4. Restore the backup that was created while Roon was previously connected to that same NAS.
Because each backup already contains the correct storage mappings for that NAS, Roon will relink your library cleanly without duplicating content or forcing a full repopulation.

Let us know if we can answer any questions.

Alex,

Thank you for your reply.

I think it’s feasible, we can try mapping / connecting a NAS folder to my computer to Roon Storage Volumes folder.

One observation from your reply is this:

“Since you will never have both NAS drives connected simultaneously, we recommend the following workaround to streamline your workflow:”

But I do have both online and connected via the Sharesync (which is running them permanently syncing together, with neither as master/slave, rather what happens on one immediately syncs with the other). I’m not sure how I get around the location problem this sets up.

I look forward to your thoughts.

All the best,

Chris

@Christopher_Boardman,

to clarify, we meant that both of those locations will not be mounted to your laptop at the same time.

The fact that they sync over the internet does not impact Roon Server, as long as both are not actively mounted to your laptop simultaneously.

Even if you did have both mounted at once, it is unlikely to cause the problems you are seeing.

In that scenario, Roon Server would simply identify the redundant files as duplicates and hide them, which should not disrupt your system.

Have you already had a chance to try anything of suggested above ?

Thanks.
