Synology Core - Many Artists Missing

I’m running my Roon Core on a Synology 1515+, pointing to an internal volume mirrored (via the Windows app Bvckup) from my Windows iTunes media directory (structurally managed by iTunes). I was using my Mac Mini to run Roon Core up until recently—everything worked properly. The Synology-based core, pointing to the same NAS volume, isn’t importing many tracks, including whole artists. I noticed the problem when searching for Led Zeppelin, including intentional misspellings and abbreviated searches.

I just noticed this late last night, so I don’t know offhand how many tracks are missing when compared to my iTunes library. I did try forcing a rescan (no change) and Roon Core is pointing to the iTunes Media volume, not the iTunes library XML file.

Hi Michael,
have you also checked the files on the Synology? Maybe something went wrong during the mirroring process (I have never used Windows Backup App).

I’ll look into it, though I think my Roon Core running on the MacMini has no trouble importing the same NAS volume—I didn’t notice any missing artists.

Logging into my Synology DSM just now, I noticed an alarming and unusual RAM usage spike, pushing 90%. That dropped to under 20% usage (including a running PLEX server) after stopping the Roon service.

RoonServer does a lot of background analysis. Especially when a new path to a music folder is added.
Once this is done for your files, the background analysis will not be as active anymore.
Has the import/analysis process finished before? You can see the in the top bar of your Roon Remote device (spinning Circle icon).
If the overall performance of your Synology is fine for you (the performance depends a lot on the library size), there is also the option to upgrade the RAM on your Synology up to 16 GB (if you feel, you are running low on RAM).

For a few weeks the Synology DS1515+, with Roon Core and Plex server active, was only running at about 40-60%. Is a memory leak over time a possibility with the current Synology build? My library contains about 65,000 tracks (mostly CD-quality ALAC).

Running Roon on an Atom CPU is an underspecced road with a library of 65k+. Running Plex in parallel will probably make things even worse.

I’ve switched back to my 2011 Mac Mini as the performance will likely be better across the board. Nevertheless, I believe the import process had completed on the Synology, so there may still be a bug or minor quirk that needs to be resolved for future builds.

The QNAP/Synolygy installer use the exact and untouched Linux builds of RoonServer. That is also why the packages are so small. They grab the latest Linux version during install. The additional scripts of these packages are just there to adjust locations of specific data like libraries and the roon database.
Some are also required for the specific package or app center controls.
From perspective of performance the Macmini should perform better. But I see no reason why the NAS version should detect less audio files. That is why I was wondering about the mirroring process.

I agree that scenario seems unlikely. I do have my Mac Mini (running Roon Server) watching the same NAS volume (SMB://[NAS]/[Volume Name]/etc.), and all the files are there. I’m not sure what to make of the discrepancy between two very similar setups.

Could this be related to the recent issue reported where RoonServer on Synology has trouble importing some files that Roon on OSX does not?

@Michael_Merline, are the missing files/artists all the same file format? I had a problem with some mp3s in particular, even though other mp3s and all of my flac imported properly on the Synology library.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to determine exactly which files were missing, though I was able to note a few specific artists that I happened to search for (unsuccessfully) in my library. That particular set of files was all ALAC, 24/192.

I’ve since reinstalled Roon on the Synology and started over with a new library—all files appear to have imported correctly this time around.
