Tag Bug or User Misperception - Your pick

On an IDed album with all compositions linked, I note that the Composition pages show, in all cases, “Unknown Composer”.

I go User Edits in Roon, selecting All Tracks of an album, and add Bach as Composer. After 5 minutes or so (and reanalyzing album), I go back to Composition pages, and… no change.

There may be an explanation, but I will claim this is a bug because it defies common sense. Thanks for listening…or reading.

Okay, I’ll try that. Thanks! :expressionless:

Hi, @John_V, thanks for the report. Could you please post you import settings here? I mean both for tracks and albums (Settings-> Library-> Import Settings).

Thanks!

News Flash: A LARGE portion of the compositions in my library with an unknown composer are actually JS Bach. A very small portion are really unknown.

Problem with metadata?

Any chance you merged Bach with someone else?

Definitely a very strange one @John_V

User error always a possibility, bordering on probability. I’ll check.

No such luck. Lots of mergers, but no JSB.

It’s Bach to the drawing board.

Hey @John_V,

I want to thank you for your patience while the technical team has been investigating your report. I had a chat with them about this today and wanted to reach out to you with an update. The team spent some time analyzing your database and have found that Unknown Composer is showing because of edits made to some of the works.

If you go into the edit screen for one of these works you should notice that there is a missing checkbox next to the composer, as seen below:

This may have happened if multiple works were selected at a time and the link to Bach was removed. Thankfully this can be resolved in the same way by selecting multiple works that are experiencing this issue and re-adding the link to Bach. Once you do this you should see Unknown Composer be replaced with JS Bach.

If you have any questions about this just let me know!

Regards,
Dylan

Bad news, Dylan. I selected about 10 Compositions to add composer tags, and guess what? Bach is there, shown as a Primary Artist. And what’s worse, if I remove old Bach and add a new Bach (at the composition window), nothing happens. Roon still flags it as unknown composer.

Now granted, if I select each performance, Go to Composition, and Edit, there is Bach as a PA, waiting to be checked.

But, there are nearly 400 compositions to do individually! Other suggestions?

PS: So, just now I tried the same procedure but on the Tracks page. Filtered on Unknown. There were only 9 unknown composers, all on one Fleetwood Mac album.

PSPS: Can you determine any specifics about the edit(s)? When it was done? What was done? I’m willing to admit user error, but I cannot imagine what I could have done that was so very very wrong.

Hey @John_V,

I’m going to pass this information along so the QA team can schedule some time to look a little deeper into this process. I can’t give any promises about changes or give timeframes on this, but it’s definitely something the team will look into.

I’m glad to know that the “Unknown Composer” issue you were experiencing is resolved though. If you have any other questions just let us know.

Happy listening!
Dylan
