Tailscale Connection Issue with Roon ARC (ref#NLT79G)

Network Setup

· My only router was provided by my ISP

ARC Status

· ARC is *Not Ready*

Roon Error Code

· The ARC settings page says "Not Ready," but I can still connect to ARC via cellular data. I'm having another problem.

Describe the issue

I use tailscale to connect roon arc to the roon server, and it has been fine for a while, but recently (today) I am having trouble connecting using tailscale. Tailscale is up and running. The roon server is up and runng (I have stopped and started it several times to no avail). Roon arc won't connect - I get either "something went wrong - try again" or "Can't connect to roon server". The second message is after removing and reinstalling the roon arc app. Nothing has changed in Roon (as far as I am aware) since the last successful connection. The macOS version is 26.3. The message on roon arc also states "Roon server last seen less than a minute ago" - but won't connect. It also says "not accessible oustide your network". I am at a loss. How can I troubleshoot these issues as the troubleshooting guide is focused on port forwarding - which I don't use.

Describe your network setup

Maxis, connected via wifi, OS is macOS 26.2, roon arc is on iPhone running 26.2

Hello @Simon_Tetley,

Thank you for the detailed description.

Since ARC does work over cellular, but fails specifically when connecting via Tailscale, the next important step is to determine whether ARC can connect locally without Tailscale involved.

Could you please try the following test:

  1. Disable Tailscale completely
  • Turn off Tailscale on the Mac running Roon Server
  • Also disable Tailscale on the iPhone
  1. Connect your iPhone to the same local WiFi network
(the same network the Roon Server is on)
  2. Launch Roon ARC and check whether it can connect to the Roon Server locally

This test helps us determine whether:

  • ARC ↔ Server communication is working correctly on the local network, and
  • the issue is isolated specifically to the Tailscale tunnel rather than Roon or ARC itself.

Please let us know the result of this local-connection test, and we’ll advise on the next steps based on that.

Hi @Simon_Tetley,

We haven’t a response and we’ll require the information requested by @vadim above in order to proceed with troubleshooting.

Please keep in mind that threads will auto-close without any OP response. We’ll keep a watch out for your reply in the meantime.

Keep in mind that Tailscale can introduce additional latency to port forwarding depending on the network path in use and whether the connection relies on Tailscale’s own relay servers. It’s for this reason we generally recommend relying on port forwarding when possible.

Either way, we’re eager to troubleshoot further and await your response. Thanks!
