Tailscale unavailable on Roon ROCK (ref#FMLAFG)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Can’t reach my Server, remotes or ARC

Can’t connect to my Server, remotes or ARC

· Other ARC issues

Tell us what's going on

· no tailscale on my roon roc

Tell us about your home network

· deco mesh

Ok to clarify this terrible help line post. I had Arc working happily for a couple of years and something has changed on my network. Routers still say UPnP enabled etc so I went to try Tailscale. But I don’t get a Tailscale option when I go into my Rock. As per image above. Am I missing something?

Most likely your ROCK was installed in Legacy BIOS mode, before RoonOS supported UEFI mode.

In this case, the RoonOS 1.0 (build 259) is the latest available OS version and you are up to date in this respect.

Tailscale was made available in RoonOS 2.1. However, OS 2.x requires that ROCK is installed in UEFI mode:

The only way to change this is by reinstalling ROCK from scratch, after switching from Legacy BIOS to UEFI in the NUC’s BIOS settings.

Hi @James_Maude,

Depending on the model, this NUC can likely switch to UEFI from Legacy boot mode.

Try these steps:

  1. Enter the BIOS. Turn on or restart the NUC and repeatedly press F2 to open the setup screen.
  2. Access advanced settings. Click Advanced at the top, or press F7.
  3. Navigate to boot settings. Go to the Boot tab, then select Boot Priority.
  4. Toggle the boot modes. Check the box for UEFI Boot, then uncheck the box for Legacy Boot.
  5. Save and exit. Press F10, then click Yes to save changes and restart.

Let us know if this helps. We’ll watch for your response and proceed from there.

Awesome, thanks, but its been 4 or 5 years since I built this (and effortless since then) - do I need to get my ROCK NUC connected to a screen and a keyboard to do the BIOS or can I do it remotely? My tech skills are upgraded for immediate tasks and then forgotten. Not big on the full reinstall - and what will happen to my music data disk? Will try the other way first. Might have to wait to the weekend if i have to move around screens

Still not sure why ARC stopped - was working and then it didn’t. No change to hardware or configuration but stuff got moved and unplugged and replugged. Upgraded internet to fibre (which should be way up stream of Roon to affect anything) but worked happily for a couple of months after that. Done numerous restarts of everything. Use ARC to listen at work and am missing it.

cheers, James

You need a keyboard and at least a TV with HDMI. This is a low-level change that happens before the operating system or networking runs.

Nothing will happen to the music data disk, but you must have a backup of your Roon database to restore it after the reinstall. The whole process is like migrating to entirely new ROCK.

Agreed, seems better to figure this out first.

On the other hand, future RoonOS updates will probably only be released for UEFI installations. Currently the only difference is Tailscale, but RoonOS 3.0 is in development and has more improvements. You won’t be forced to switch to it, but at some point you may want to (or not)

Thanks - have an RDO Friday and will give it a red hot go!

Hey @James_Maude,

Thanks for the updates and additional info! @Suedkiez is spot on correct with all the above info.

Let us know how the above goes and if you have any questions along the way. :+1:
