The Mel-Tones vs The Meltones

Content you’re reporting an issue with

The name The Mel-Tones has been used by at least two groups. The first is a vocal backup group for Mel Torme from the 1940s. The second is a surf band from Canada formed in the 1990s. There’s also an entry for The Meltones with the album from the Canadian surf band, but it is claimed to be formed in France. Screenshot below.

Description of the issue

As discussed above.

Being interested, I found more issues:

The Surf Sensation album in my Roon (streaming versions) is actually attributed to three different Meltones, the Mel-Tones vocal backup group, the Meltones from France, and the MelTones surf band with the correct Canadian origin:

There’s another Meltones without any info that has the Surf Spy Space album attributed to them, which is from the Canadian surf Meltones, and the Nearly Colored album which is by the Meltones from France:

These are the Canadian surf MelTones on Discogs, the picture is the same as in your first screenshot where it’s wrongly used for the vocal band as well

These are the Meltones from France:

However, in Roon the Nearly Colored is also attributed (on the left in the list) to “yet another different Meltones without any more info” I mentioned above, the right one here in the list are the Meltones from France (likely correct),

And then there is one more Meltones that looks like this:

and the release is very new, and not to be found on Discogs, but the picture looks like different people than any of the others so far, so probably correct that this is separate:

Wow that is a comprehensive investigation on short notice, particularly for such an obscure band. Now it remains to be seen if Roon can actually manage to get this fixed. It’s pretty messed up, understandably so.

I’m easy to trigger with obscure surf bands

Cloud wisdom is not what it’s made out to be, the number of errors is horrific overall. People who don’t know for sure simply shouldn’t edit online databases

There’s also a 90ies instrumental and a bit of surf band Pell Mell from Oregon (with Steve Fisk and for some time releasing through SST Records), a German prog rog band from the 70ies of the same name, and another, I think Czech, contemporary rock band, the complications of which also kept me up at night once  I seen now that they are largely separate in Roon now, with just minor misattributions

Well this is a :exploding_head: .

I’ve fired off an email to TiVo, who seem to be the main source of the confusion; then we’ll see what happens after the dust settles. I appreciate the obscure surf band investigation

Really not helped by the surf band having THE MEL-TONES and THE MEL·TONES on some of their covers, but apparently calling themselves The MelTones…
