I’ve found various nods to this and mixed advice here, but it seems it’s at least possible to achieve the following:
If I were to have my main roon core/server at home, and a second core/server at location #2, I would like to be able to log out at home/log in at location #2 and have my same library.
The actual duplication of the SSD could be handled in one of two ways, 1: take the drive with me, or 2: take a backup of the current drive state with me. Either way, I have an SSD with me, and plug it into the core/server.
What are the trickiest parts of doing this? How has this gone for people trying the same/similar thing?
We have 2 homes and I shuttle a laptop with the Roon core on it between them. I have a terabyte of ripped music in each home which I attach to the laptop. I and also bring a drive with me with the music (I would eliminate the multiple copies and just use that mobile drive if I wasn’t so paranoid about backups). I use a program called Beyond Compare to keep the drives up to date (it is really a more fully developed File Explorer). I fully realize this is pathetic but I don’t have the energy to work out another solution. PS - I would love to have a Roon ARC solution where the core could stay in one location and the other home could feed reliably from that.
you’re right, an ARC-like solution would be ideal. So you’re essentially relocating your whole roon setup each time? I have an antipodes server with an internal drive, so I was thinking it would be easier to just take the drive and maybe have a server setup on a mac mini at the other place. I’d ideally just like to open my laptop or phone roon app and have the same library available without any repeated tweaking required.
Yes I do relocate each time. It works pretty well, actually with the system coming up right away. It is my understanding that you can’t run Roon cores in separate homes without paying Roon double. Then there would still be the syncing issue. A more robust Roon ARC capability would solve that. Roon: if you are listening, I’d buy a pricey Roon piece of hardware if you could enable this Roon ARC functionality for 2 homes!
You can’t run two Roon Servers simultaneously on just one license - that is the scenario where a second license is necessary.
You can, however, have multiple Roon Servers and transfer a single license to the one Roon Server that you want to be currently active.
Agreed. That’s why I use the sneakerware approach. But it would be nice if Roon had a 2 house solution that didn’t involve paying double. They could make it up from me as I would buy Roon hardware if I could have one house remote. I might be convinced to pay Roon double but there seems like a syncing problem that would still require manual intervention. Hence, I can transport the laptop for now.
That would be a dream. If you could have a nucleus at each location, and they self-managed library access with one acting as a primary unit (or even better followed a change log and duplicated files across the net from nucleus A to B, for a convenient backup method)
