The question about whether setting up ROCK or installing Roon Server on Synology NAS results in better audio quality, or if there is no difference?
Provided the hardware platform has the processing power to keep up with any Muse DSP that you use, there is no difference in audio quality between different hardware/OS combinations.
If you don’t intend to do any DSP, both will give the same audio performance.
As you increase the amount of DSP performed, however, it is likely that the NAS solution would break down before a ROCK install on a modern NUC - unless you have one of the more exotic Synology NAS devices.
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I will not use the “amount of DSP” but only as a Roon Server for devices that are Roon Ready.
No difference whatsoever, either will push exactly the same bits across the network.
While there might not be an SQ difference, there could be a “is it good enough” difference in terms of handling the processing requirements of the database. That is a combination of what is the processor and RAM amount of the NAS, the number of tracks expected to be in your library.
